My review is the same as all the rest
My review is the same as all the rest. Hired a car at verona airport and was charge extra £642 for damages. I have sent them video proofs showing that damage was already there when I picked up the car. I made videos of thr car at pick up and drop off. Emailed them but never heard back. Now raised a dispute with my credit card company. WOULD NEVER USE AVIS AGAIN
After more than 30 rentals with AVIS, I was the victim of a bait-and-switch at FCO, overcharged €1342, AVIS admitted their mistake—then refused to refund. How can I rent from them again?
Subject: After more than 30 rentals with AVIS, I was the victim of a bait-and-switch at FCO, overcharged €1342, AVIS admitted their mistake—then refused to refund. How can I rent from them again?
Details: In September, AVIS overcharged me €1342 on a 50-day rental from FCO to MXP—a clear bait and switch at the FCO Preferred counter. I booked online from the U.S. for an estimated total of €2317, but at pickup, the agent split it into two contracts. When I asked why, I got no answer. When I asked if the total cost remained the same, she said, “Yes.” Jet-lagged, I signed without scrutinizing the details.
Later, I discovered unauthorized charges. On the phone, a live Customer Service representative admitted the mistake, promised a refund in 14 days—yet nothing came. Despite escalating twice in writing, including to AVIS Corporate directly, they refused to correct it, simply stating, “You signed the contracts.”
My mistakes? Trusting the agent’s word and waiting for the refund instead of disputing the charge immediately. After more than 30 rentals from FCO since 1993, always with AVIS, pleased with the past service, this is how a loyal customer is treated? How can I ever rent from AVIS again? Scam artists.
Scam artists.
Do not go near this company.
Booked and pre-paid for a car online via an airline.
Declined all extras at the airport when collecting the car due to having a policy that covers hire car excess.
Upon returning the car they were happy with the condition but tried to get an extra payment for windscreen cover (not taken).
After this they changed it to cover the fuel, the tank was full as i'd just filled it less than 1 kilometre away.
They then said it was for a airport surcharge, again already covered.
Eventually they agreed that there was nothing to pay and asked my to sign the hand held touch screen to print off my return receipt.
Receipt printed off only to say "Amount due €180"
When questioned they said don't worry there's nothing to pay.
Quelle surprise when 3 days later the money is taken from my account.
Do not use this company in Napoli/Italy.
Complete scam artists and they are all in on it.
AVIS corporate should look into what's happening at it's franchises especially at Naples airport.
Extreme waiting time to get a car that…
Extreme waiting time to get a car that is prebooked to a specific date and time. Mayb I kindly suggest you reco sider using avis and instead use somebody else for your rental car requirements. They are expensice and extremely slow
No empathy, terrible customer service and daylight thieves
The worst not only car rental company I have dealt with but worst company and worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life.
We rented a car from Avis at Malpensa airport in Milan to go ski in Livigno. Half way through the ski trip I broke my ribs, rendering me in a lot of pain and not able to drive. I called Avis to ask them if they could please add my wife as a driver to the car - I also mentioned I was happy to pay the extra fee (whatever it may be). They were extremely unhelpful and said I needed to go to an office to do this 2 hours away (when I was unable to drive). I explained that I could not drive 2 hours and that I needed some help to get it done online and they proceeded to cut me off mid sentence. I called back multiple times to check what my options were but the customer service people started answering the phone and just leaving the line open whilst I could hear them talking in the background. I have never been treated in such a rude manner with so little empathy.
Eventually, I drove the car back 4 hours with broken ribs and in pain as Avis refused to help me look into other options. When I arrived back they charged me an extra 50 euros for some optional service item that I never agreed to at all and was clear with them that I did not want any additional options.
I would recommend renting a car from literally any other car rental company available. Do not go with Avis. My friend on the same ski trip also got charged an extra 400 euro for things he was unaware of so this is not an isolated incident.
Just appalling
Just appalling. Car broke down and their only interest was in securing the car. Couldn’t provide a replacement unless I travelled 100 miles to collect it. These things happen. However getting a refund for the days without a car took eights months of war. No response to any correspondence. I had to use the services of European Car Rental Conciliation Service who were very good. I’ll never use Avis again. I thought they were a premium brand - they certainly charge premium prices.
Disastrous experience with AVIS Italia – Dangerous vehicle and nonexistent service
I rented a car with AVIS, booking a PREMIUM category vehicle. Upon arrival, the car was unavailable, and I was offered a more expensive contract for a LUXURY category vehicle, which turned out to be a disaster: visible damage, serious mechanical issues (malfunctioning steering, worn-out brakes, excessive vibrations, among others) that severely compromised the car's reliability, and no assistance despite their promises.
After days of attempts, I was forced to drive 540 km (round trip) to Palermo for a replacement car, with extra expenses that were not reimbursed. Customer service was nonexistent, refusing any refund and responding with total indifference.
An unacceptable experience for a brand like AVIS. Not recommended.
Scam - Avoid. 900 euro charge for a perfectly returned car
3 days after returning the car. No refund of amounts charged. A seperate amount of 900 euros issued on the day after return. No explanation why, no email, no phone call. Car was returned in perfect condition with no issues. After 7 emails to customer service I finally have received an invoice stating 900 euros charge for accident/repairs. I have had no email or phone call informing me of this. Again the car was returned with no issues so why am I being charged this? Absolutely terrible service, for a company I have used several times now and will not be using again.
No reason given for the 900 euro charge. Absolute scam
The worst rental company
The worst rental company. Extremely rude staff, I saw how the employee assaulted customer. NEVER RENT FROM THIS JOKES. I hope customer presses charged.
Edit: The employee is named Alina
We were scammed out of 550 Euros for…
We were scammed out of 550 Euros for being 10 minutes late to the drop off. The reason we were 10 Minutes late is the key drop off had no staff so we went to the other staffed office and lined up only to be told to go to the other office which resulted in us being 10 minutes late. They charged us 550 euros for this. Absolute scam of a company
Rubbish services
Rubbish services, stay away. I rented a car from Avis at Milan Linate Airport starting on November 11th to return the car November 14th, 2024, in Pisa. And the experience was nothing short of a nightmare. While I didn’t mind that the car had large scratches on the driver’s side and small dents on the roof, the real issues began on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 13th, when I got a flat tire—and everything went downhill from there.
I called the roadside assistance number provided in my rental agreement, expecting someone to come and replace the tire. Instead, after waiting for about an hour, a tow truck arrived and towed the car away, leaving me stranded in a small village near the motorway with no replacement vehicle offered. This left me completely stuck.
I contacted roadside assistance again, explaining that I needed to be in Pisa the next day to catch my flight home. However, they informed me—yet again—that they could not provide transportation or a replacement car. I then tried contacting Avis offices in both Linate and Pisa, only to be met with automated answering systems that made it impossible to speak to a real person.
The entire experience was appalling and unacceptable. Being abandoned without any support or alternatives from a company as well-known as Avis was shocking. And to make matters worse, when I received the final invoice, I was charged for roadside assistance, an accident fee (which makes no sense), and refueling charges (how could I refule the car if it had a flat tire?)—even though I had taken out full insurance, including coverage for windows and wheels.
I would never recommend Avis or Budget to anyone. This was by far the most disgusting and disappointing experience I’ve ever had with a car rental company. Avoid them at all costs.
Great and friendly service at the FCO…
Great and friendly service at the FCO airport desk for an adhoc rental despite queue. Price was competitive. Return was easy.
SCAMMING HELPLESS CUSTOMERS
In the days following the return of my Jeep Compass rental at Rome Fiumicino Airport, AVIS Fiumicino claimed damage in the amount of EUR333.82 for a missing cargo cover and an idling charge. I tried contacting AVIS Fiumicino by phone several times, but when I started speaking they would hang up the phone on me. I eventually got a hold of them through email and they said that I needed to provide evidence to prove that the cargo cover was missing when I picked up the vehicle (I had no idea a cargo cover was part of the vehicle, so I had no way of knowing it was missing when I picked up the vehicle). As for the idling charge, the vehicle was turned off when returned. The AVIS attendant who checked the fuel and milage turned on the vehicle to do his checks and left it running while we unloaded our luggage. The attendant took pictures of the drivers display, which I had just figured he was doing to document milage and fuel. I was outraged to find out later that the technician had used the photo to make a bogus claim that I left the vehicle idling.
Having recently read reviews, it's clear this has been going on for years. Shame on AVIS corporate for allowing these disgusting acts of fraud to continue. I want a full refund for the fraudulent charges that were charged to my credit card and I want Avis Budget Group to put a stop to the systemic scamming that is taking place at the Rome Fiumicino Airport location so that your customers stop falling victim to this CRIME!!!
Avis Siena to be avoided at all costs /…
Avis Siena to be avoided at all costs / turned up last week and was in a queue of around 20 people all whom have rebooked a rental but no cars
Staff were totally utterly out of their depth and decided to firstly tell customers that a British licence was not good enough to get a rental ( which Avis publicity says completely different ) and then closed for three hours : just dumped in middle of nowhere
Not recommended!
They give me a car with a crack on the front window. They said I'm fully insured. Avis Rome con artist
I landed in Rome Italy, April 25, 2024 renting and Avis van which I had an agreement through Expedia for five day rental. Total rental cost would be €947 I rented the van. I used it for four days instead of five days, they ended up billing Me €3473. I was traveling with my daughter and her husband and four kids from Palermo Sicily to Rome plane delay instead of getting to Rome at 10 o’clock in the morning. We got to Rome at 4:30 in the afternoon. We lost a day of travel but it was OK. They didn’t have the agreement from Expedia so they gave me this paper which they claim was not the right amount. They couldn’t give me the right amount until they looked at everything on return they would give me the correct amount, what happened? They charge me all kinds of insurance or kinds of extra charges. There were no problem with the van no scratches no nothing. Everything was returned fine but they bill my credit card $3473. I asked my credit card not to pay for it, but of course they didn’t do that , I paid my credit card amount that was due but as far as Avis sales people, they are corrupt con artist They think that all Americans are stupid very upset with Rome and it’s Italian people at I would not recommend anybody to use Avis in Rome.
Never again
Customer service terrible. Nothing was explained properly. Car was dirty inside and outside, petrol tank wasn't full, there was no screen wash fluid. I received final bill in Italian. The summary wasn't right. There was position missing on the bill. The quotes on the bill were diferent than those of my agreement with British Airways ( car was rented via British Airways Club)
A good no-nonsense experience
We booked a car online for pick up in Verona near the central station. Only after completing the booking did I go and check to see the Italian Avis rating here and got a bit worried. So I sort of felt obligated to come back and day that it is possible to have a good experience with them.
Quick and friendly, English speaking people behind the counter at both pick up and return. Not trying hard to talk us into buying extra stuff like insurance, after I said we already have one. We even got a better car than we actually booked.
Unacceptable Treatment by Avis Staff at Bologna Airport – A Disgrace to Italy’s Tourism
The service at Avis was absolutely unacceptable. My wife and I were treated with complete disrespect by the Avis office manager at Bologna airport. It's shocking that such unprofessional people are allowed to represent the company and interact with customers. As tourists, this was our first interaction in Italy, and it left us with a terrible impression of the country. Italy is an amazing destination, but it deserves to have professionals who know how to properly treat visitors, not rude and disrespectful individuals like the ones we encountered!
Do not rent a car from Avis if you are travelling in Tuscany
Do not rent a car from Avis if you are travelling in Tuscany, service is non existent and poor. We hired a car for 10 days and we got a flat tyre on day 2. We waited for 4 hours for assistance only to have to get our own taxi to our hotel. It’s late in day 3 we don’t have a replacement car and we have been advised there are no cars available in Siena and we cannot have the old car back once the tyre is repaired??
Avis customer service is very poor as us Avis Siena
Look at Hertz or other companies but don’t go with Avis
