Review summary

Based on reviews, created with AI

Most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Customers express widespread dissatisfaction with various aspects of OfferUp. Many consumers report negative experiences with the app itself, citing issues such as annoying ads, outdated posts, and duplicate listings. People also report problems with marketing practices, feeling misled or scammed. Consumers are also frustrated by the lack of responsiveness from sellers and the poor quality of customer service. Many reviewers mention that sellers often don't respond to inquiries, and when they do, communication can be difficult. The delivery service is another source of complaints, with consumers reporting issues such as items not being as advertised, canceled transactions, and difficulties in resolving disputes.

Offerup would rather ban than resolve issues

I've been an avid user of Offerup for a decade. I tried to login today and was greeted by the message, "your account is banned." No warning. No emails or notifications. No explanation. I contacted support to figure out what happened and Offerup responded with, "we dont have to tell you." hahaha.

The exact wording "OfferUp reserves the right to remove items or profiles at its own discretion with or without previous warning or education efforts."

So after 10 years of active service and helping to generate revenue, I received no notice, just ban, with no explanation. Perhaps Offerup is trying to downgrade their site and push all of their customers to Facebook Marketplace?

Offerup has been going downhill for a while especially with bots and scammers, but they aren't the brightest in the shed. When the platform, Offerup, is just banning long-standing customers without reason, explanation, or notification on how to resolve whatever issue they are claiming happened, you can expect people will just enjoy other platforms that work with their customers for the mutually beneficial relationship.

Whenever I have an issue on Facebook Marketplace, Facebook support is available and super helpful to correct whatever needs correcting.

We watched as Craigslist turned into a cesspool and now Offerup is following the same path. At least I won't be required to endure the scams and abuse on Offerup any longer.

Good luck to those still stuck using Offerup, but try out FB Marketplace and other platforms. You may be presently surprised.

1 star because the Offerup platform has chosen not to resolve any issues with their customers any more and just ban accounts. Really poor business model.

One star is too much for OfferUp

One star is too much for OfferUp!
I've been using OfferUp for a number of years; listing items for sale on their site has its faults. They never corrected sight problems. If I want to list a bunch of things, I always found other sights more user friendly.
Recently I posted a skirt suit and a pair of shoes. I get a quick response that my skirt suit is sold and they just need me to log in at a sight and give private information.
This is a common scam! I do not respond to these.
I periodically check my listings, for updates, interests etc.
I find OfferUp has deactivated my account. No reason given.
I got in touch with Support and the only so called support was an AI generic and same wording response over and over, no matter what questions I asked.
Finally I was asked if I want to speak to an actual person.
I submitted my Name and Email address per their request.
OfferUp responds, my email, which has been the same for a number of years, is NOT a valid one.
This is OfferUp's NON Support!
No emails following - No trying to get in touch -

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for reaching out about this. I'm very sorry to hear about the issue with the plasma cutter and that you're out $350. That is a frustrating situation, and I want to help you figure out the next steps.

The options available to you depend entirely on how the transaction was handled (whether it was an in-person cash sale or a shipped item paid for in the app). In order for me to give you the correct guidance, I first need to look at the specific transaction.

I've sent you a secure request through Trustpilot for more information. Please check your email for that form — once I have that, I can look into what happened.

For future reference, sales that are paid for and shipped through OfferUp are covered by our Buyer Protection program. For in-person transactions where a crime may have occurred, the appropriate next step is to file a report with local law enforcement.

I'll be on the lookout for your reply to the secure request so we can get this sorted out.

Warmly,
Emma | OfferUp Support

I purchased a washer for $325

I purchased a washer for $325, seller (scammer) offers 30 day warranty on all of their listings, they sell apploancess, we made the deal by messages over offer up, seller asked for the payment to be cash only, i didn't see this red flag, I though offer up was a trustfull site like ebay
The washer was delivered to my house and i got a receipt with the 30 day warranty, the first day trying to use the washer didn't work and seller never responded to my messages, I tried to file a claim with offer up, but customer support said they could not do anything about, i was to naive when paying cash, I am a boomer so I do trust people, sadly people turn to evil, can't trust anyone or any site like offer up anymore
PLEASE REED THIS BEFORE MAKING ANY TRANSACTION ON THIS SITE FULL OF SCAMMERS

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am so sorry to hear that your trust in our community was broken by this seller. We take these reports very seriously and want to investigate this report immediately.

To do that, I've sent you a secure request through Trustpilot for more details. Please check your email for that request.

Since the seller failed to honor their promise on an in-person cash sale, the appropriate next step is to file a report with your local law enforcement. Our Trust & Safety team is prepared to work with the investigating officer as needed.

I know this is a difficult situation, and we appreciate you bringing it to our attention. I'll be on the lookout for your reply to the secure request.

Absolutely the worst experience I ever…

Absolutely the worst experience I ever had. Sold something for amount smaller than $60 with shipping, and before I had a chance to put accounting info for depositing that money something went wrong with my profile and credentials were expired. Now having nonexistent customer support, no people to talk to, I had no other recourse than to forfeit my $56. They allegedly have moderators but that is more useless, they don’t do anything, there’s no person to get in charge even though they charge you $5-$10 per listing vehicles and take a cut when you ship items. This used to be great popular platform that is now neglected and now not used to generate money, no customer service. And the whole reason my account was taken down is because of one ridiculous complaint from customer, not even legitimate, I had no opportunity to defend my point.

Offerup has been a sinking ship ever…

Offerup has been a sinking ship ever since they merged with Letgo back in 2020.
The app has ZERO customer service. If you are patient enough to leave through the obnoxious self help articles, click back and forth enough, it might open the secret portal to let you send an inquiry to customer service but, even IF someone responds back, it's like they don't even read what you wrote about. Perhaps saying artificial robot sends a generic claim response back to you. They may tell you to clear your cache, for stop, uninstall and reinstall the app, login and log out or to send them a screenshot or video of the problem. Well, even if you tell them up front, hey here's a screenshot, I've also cleared the cache, forced stop, uninstalled and reinstalled the app I logged in and logged out but it still doesn't seem to fix the problem.
I have gone back and forth with them multiple times with various problems with the app and it's like they just don't understand, like maybe they don't speak my language and don't know how to translate it. It's really weird.
This app keeps users accounts open even if they haven't even logged in or checked anything in years.
The same issue with items that are posted for sale. Let's see I'm moving and I post a bunch of things for sale and then I get busy and I forget and I don't delete the ads. Well that's okay, good old OfferUp will leave those ads up for you for years and years and years and constantly rotate them to look like fresh from new merchandise when in fact, you already sold everything or donated it's Goodwill and moved out of town and have a look at the app in years. Not to worry, they'll be there forever.
Good luck getting anybody to respond when you are interested in buying something. There are so many old outdated accounts and so much old merchandise to sift through.
I reached out to them one time and I said hey, would you guys ever consider doing like most online places do and automatically delete an ad after oh I don't know, 6 months of it being there? Or maybe send a reminder to the user to renew the ad or it will be automatically deleted or something I mean come on people, you rely on artificial intelligence to run the whole program, can't you program something in to tell the robot to take an ad down?
before they merged, this app used to be a very active great place to easily buy and sell things and everything was fresh and new and quite busy but, since the merger, OfferUp has just flushed this thing down the toilet.
Now, they have all kinds of job services and automobiles and handyman services and whatever else in the app is so cluttered. When you're scrolling all these little pop-up things block your actual visual window to see items because they're always trying to get you to go to timu or whatever else advertisers they're dealing with. The newest thing now is, if you're scrolling along out of nowhere, the screen locks up and they show you a video adding you have to watch it but luckily for me, I'm smart enough to know that if I close out the app and then open right back up again the ad is gone but, it's still annoying.
I stuck around with this app because I do occasionally get a nice treasure or sell something but it's very very uncommon anymore these days. I'm at the point right now where it's time to say goodbye to OfferUp because it's not doing my blood pressure or my wallet any good.

Hi Justin,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed and honest review. It’s clear you've been with us for a long time, and you're passionate about what OfferUp is and what it could be. For that reason, it’s tough to read that your experience has become so frustrating.

First, I want to address your experience with our support team. It’s important to us that every user feels heard and that their specific issues are addressed, so I'm sorry that your experience has been the opposite. I want to look into the specific tickets you've mentioned, but I can't see your account details from this public review. I’ve sent you a secure request through Trustpilot to gather a few more details so I can investigate this for you personally.

Regarding your points about the marketplace feeling cluttered with old listings, you've hit on a major challenge. Currently, older listings are eventually auto-archived, and many that remain active are ones where sellers have recently confirmed are still for sale. That said, we know this system isn't perfect and can lead to the experience you've described. We are actively working on improving this, and I'm sharing your specific feedback directly with our product team as they fine-tune this process.

I also hear your frustration with ads. We are always working to balance the experience, as they are what allow us to keep the core buying and selling features free for millions of users and help us invest in making the app better.

Feedback like yours, especially from a long-time user, is exactly what we need to hear to see where we're falling short. Our small but mighty team is genuinely passionate about creating the best local marketplace, and we know we have work to do.

I hope we can resolve your specific support issues and that you'll consider giving us another chance to show you the improvements we're making. Thank you again for your patience and your passion.

Don't Bother

I have tried to purchase various items and only 1 in 30 responded! Why do people put items up for sale if the do not want to sell them? I only contacted those who had activity in their account within a week and nothing -- no response. One gentleman responded and he did so right away. They want you to pay for messages

They want you to pay them to get responses from sellers faster. So if you’re selling something and want to sell it quickly, they might be hiding buyer messages from you for some period of time, making it hard to coordinate. If you’re trying to buy something, they’re likely hiding your messages from sellers and likely making it harder for you to buy. This is not a normal way to handle direct messages, they have deliberately made them slower so you have to pay to make them work as normal.

Some of the drop down messages cover up item details or photos and don’t show a way to minimize them, this is an issue on both the website and app and is likely an easy fix in Java or CSS if they weren’t so concerned with cramming ads in the screen.

Search filters are less than bare minimum, you can’t search TVs for things like size, screen type, or features. So if I use the search term “smart TV”, it will show me everything with that phrase, including TV’s listed at “NOT a smart TV”. Even if you sort by highest to lowest, they’ll still pepper in a bunch of the most expensive items at the top that aren’t even sponsored by the seller.

Finally, how poor of a business decision maker do you have to be to post adds for eBay on your own reselling website?

I’ll be deleting the app again as soon as I find what I’m looking for.

Update: I tried their little 3 day free trial to get my messages simply delivered and it only worked on 2 chats. The other 10 I have open just trying to buy a stationary bike haven’t been read in over 24hrs. I’ve signed out multiple times, tried on desktop, deleted and re-installed the app like 5 times, nothing works to push messages through. Stick to Craig’s List, people actually respond because CL doesn’t hold messages in an attempt to shake you down for $8/mo.

Hi Anna,

Thank you so much for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about your experience. I am sorry to hear you've had so many frustrating issues with our platform. I'd be happy to clarify a few things and assure you that we're taking your feedback seriously.

Messaging & Premium: I want to be clear that we never deliberately hide or slow down messages to encourage a paid subscription. The core OfferUp experience is built on direct communication, and a Premium subscription is an optional upgrade that simply adds features like a special badge and inbox priority, which can lead to faster responses.

UI Issues: We'd love to learn more about your mention of messages covering up details. This sounds like a bug we need to fix, and I’ve sent you a secure request through Trustpilot to gather a few more details so our team can look into it.

Search Filters: Thank you for your feedback on our search filters — this is incredibly useful. You’ve hit on a known pain point, and we are actively working to improve the search experience and add more robust filters to help you find exactly what you're looking for, without the irrelevant results you described. Your specific examples are being passed along to our product and engineering teams for review.

Ads: I understand it can be confusing to see ads for other marketplaces on our app. As a business, ads help us keep our core services free and allow us to invest in new features and improvements. It’s also important to us that we support the entire secondhand community — even on other platforms — by shining a light on the recommerce mission.

Premium Trial & Unresponsive Sellers: I'm very sorry the Premium trial did not work out for you. While your messages were likely delivered, we can’t guarantee a seller will respond. We're always improving to help users find more reliable users.

Thank you again for your honesty and for helping us make OfferUp better. We hope you'll give us another chance to serve you.

I canceled my subscription within the 3-day trial window and they still charged my card. I waited 1.5 hours on the chat for the promised associate to arrive and they advised that the fine print indicates that the 3-day trial only lasts 48 hours and refused to refund me. Total scam. They're not looking for repeat customers, just gullible ones.

Hi Ron,

Thank you for your feedback about your recent experience with our support team, and for providing your contact information so that I could look into this more closely.

I've read through your exchange with our agents and can see how frustrating it must have been to not only try to rate your buyer, but also to get a clear response from our team. Your question required a more detailed and consistent response, and I'm sorry our team didn't provide that for you right away.

I understand you were hoping for a phone call to speed up the resolution. Please note that at this time, our support is only available via chat or email.

Your feedback is incredibly valuable. We'll be sure to use this case to update our resources so we can provide clearer support moving forward.

If there's anything else you have questions about, feel free to reach out to us again. We hope you'll give us another chance to serve you better in the future.

Thanks for being part of our community.

Warmly,
Emma | OfferUp Support

Don't bother, it's a waste of time and energy

I've tried to sell a few things and it's better just to donate your things as most people think everything should be under$20 then try to haggle with you, don't communicate or don't show up to pick up. I tried to sell a lightly used $500 printer for $250 and got complaints that it worked great but had a little dust on it (it was in storage a short whike) and then insisted on returning it (they probably just used it for a print job) Not worth the hassle of listing. I won't be using it again.

We're so sorry to hear about your frustrating experience selling on OfferUp, and we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback.

While we can’t control every interaction, we are deeply committed to supporting our sellers by building tools and features that make meaningful exchanges easier and more reliable.

Specifically, we want to address your experience selling the printer. We consider an in-person sale to be final once money is exchanged, though the return policy is ultimately up to you. Additionally, our tools make it easy for you to report buyers who act inappropriately. Our full commitment to sellers can be found here: https://bit.ly/4onaWad

We appreciate the time you spent as part of the OfferUp community, and I’m so sorry this experience led you to leave the app. If you ever decide to return, we’d be glad to welcome you back and provide a better experience in the future.

Thank you again for this honest feedback — it helps us understand how we can continue to improve.

Premium plus literally lost me money

I can should have checked here before using it. I got charged not once but twice from these guys. Im sure it was just a "glitch" but yeah not only did its premium trial do nothing but they wanted like 35$. Well they got it because im tired of reaching out to these companys. Id rather help sink them so the legit ones can rise. 100% pass on this. Its not even worth a homeless persons time.

Hi Dan, I'm really sorry to hear that you've been having a frustrating experience with OfferUp lately. That's definitely not what we want for you or our community.

You've hit on some really important points. We're always working to balance the mix of sellers on our platform — we love supporting local businesses, but our heart is still very much in helping neighbors find great deals on used items from each other.

And you're absolutely right to want relevant search results! While our local search goes up to a 50-mile max radius (with or without the app!), you might be seeing items from further away if they're available for shipping (look for the small blue truck icon) — but know that you can always toggle this off by adjusting your search to show only local items. And if older listings are popping up, you can sort your results by 'Recent first' to see the newest items right away.

We appreciate you taking the time to share such honest feedback. It helps us understand where we need to focus our efforts to make OfferUp a better place for everyone.

Warmly,

NOT FOR ME. SHITTY SITE!!!

Well now I have six people who I tried doing business with and not one has returned my messages or offers. This company does give a crap who list something and has no interest in being involved in a listing. So, how are they making money? I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SITE....IT'S A TOTAL WASTE OF TIME!!!
I continue to hope that something is done. If a report comes into you, delete the listing. Your not going to make money by leaving these unanswered listers anyway!!!

I had a charge of $19.99 for an offerUp subscription out of the blue charged to my CC. I tried to find a way to get it back but they have no contact information. I cancelled the subscription right away but I still want my money back. I cancelled the card right away to ensure it dosent happen again. I sold tons of stuff on the free application with no problems for many years. But now this scam made me quit the app and cancel. What a scam!!!

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I can imagine how frustrating and confusing it must have felt to see that unexpected charge — especially after using the app without any issues for so long.

Please know we never charge users without their permission, which is granted via the App Store or Google Play. In many cases, a free trial may convert to a paid subscription if it isn’t canceled before the trial period ends. In other cases, charges might appear if someone else using the same app store account starts a trial that later renews. I won’t know for sure what happened in your case until I can take a closer look, but I want to make sure we get this sorted out properly.

I’ve sent you a secure request through Trustpilot to gather a few more details and can follow up from there. If it’s easier, you can also reach out through our contact form here: https://bit.ly/4fVmAnt.

We appreciate the time you spent as part of the OfferUp community, and I’m sorry this experience led you to leave the app. If you ever decide to return, we’d be glad to support you — but for now, I just hope we can help clear up the confusion and provide a better experience moving forward.

I purchased some 4.6 vote, golf cart batteries, and not one of them was any good I asked offer up to help to get a refund and they did absolutely nothing. What a disgusting sight never buy from them.

Hi Glen,

I’m really sorry to hear about your experience. It’s incredibly frustrating to purchase something only to find that it doesn't work as expected. You deserved a better outcome.

Depending on whether this transaction happened in person or through OfferUp shipping, I’d be glad to take a closer look and see what might still be possible. I’ve sent you a secure request through Trustpilot to gather more information and can follow up directly from there.

If you purchased through in-app shipping, buyers are protected by our Purchase Protection Policy. More information on that here: https://bit.ly/3C1p9Gx

Thanks again for reaching out, and I’m sorry for the trouble. We're here to support you however we can.
