Review of US Fireplace Store

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

No integrity

Placed an order and paid. Company confirmed the order. (I noted that the web site purports to track the number of buyers who have put the product in a cart.)
Three days later, the company emailed me that they did not have the product in-stock, but they had found a supplier and were willing to honor the order for $500 more, which they would split with me.
I declined. This is bait-and-switch, fraudulent and false and deceptive marketing. At no time did the company inform me that it was not selling a product from its own inventory. The company touts its extensive access to inventory but then thinks it is acceptable to charge more than they agreed. A total absence of integrity.

Buyers beware

Buyers beware. Dishonest company. I purchased a three-pack of their (expensive) boxers. Before I had time to wear them, the company requested that I review the product. I gave them an accurate, albeit limited, review, noting that the boxers are expensive. A fact, not a complaint. The company deleted my review. If you look today, there are only seven reviews of the product, all five-star. This is deceptive, so I will not do business with them again.

Review of Cove

Rated 1 out of 5 stars

Lousy from the outset

From the time we purchased, the company provided poor service and support. So, we cancelled the monitoring but did not request a refund for the equipment. When we tried to add sensors that we had already purchased, we were told that we cannot because we no longer pay for monitoring. Since we already paid for the devices, it seems we should be able to use them without monitoring. The company at no time told us we would effectively lose the ability to use the equipment if we cancelled monitoring. Very unfriendly service.

In the week since
I posted the review, Cove replied, implying it would address my issue. Instead, Cove has failed to call when asked, its reps have hung up on me and the end result is that they will not honor my ownership of the equipment by letting me access the Cove app so that I can add sensors I bought with my original purchase. In short, my decision to cancel Cove was a good one. It has proven it remains a lousy company with no commitment to full disclosure or customer service, no matter how many replies it writes to valid reviews like this one.

Exorbitant prices for ex-library books…

Exorbitant prices for ex-library books for which I suspect Thriftbooks paid a pittance (hardbacks go for $1 in my area, paperbacks for $0.50). Sure, Thriftbooks has overhead, but the libraries need to be able to recycle their investment in books also. After all, they let their patrons read for free.

Review of Amazon

Will Amazon ever deliver my order?

I ordered a product first week of November. When it did not arrive as scheduled, I contacted "Customer Service", a mostly polite but completely ill-prepared group whose main purpose is to read to customers the information about their order that is available on the Amazon web site.
Customer Service declared that there was no inventory to fulfill my order; however, on the Amazon web site for the item, it explicitly stated that there were several in stock. I have contacted Customer Service several times with the same result. They have no authority to resolve the issue by expediting an order that is now almost two months old (as many other online retailers would do), and the item continues to appear available (I have time-stamped screenshots).
The price has increased since I first placed my order, so I cannot help but wonder if Amazon is trying to outwait me and planning to send an email telling me how sorry they are that the product is no longer available (when they could have sent it at any time in the past two months).

As usual

As usual, overpriced for used books, especially ex-library which my experience suggests you paid obscenely low prices to acquire. Like other large companies, your volume puts small used booksellers out of business so fewer people who need to buy inexpensive books have access. For those of us who live in places where we have limited access to used book stores, Thriftbooks dominates and limits what we can purchase due to reduced competition.

Pricing appears driven by greed more than supply/demand. E,g., when you have 50 copies in stock, full retail price seems excessive.

You do not care about feedback.

You do not care about the feedback from your longtime customers. That is your choice, a conscious business decision. But do not expect that it will serve you well over time.
You ignore feedback consistently. You overprice your product and continue to be ineffective competing with your peers.

Overpriced used books even when Thriftbooks has ample inventory and there is no special value to the individual book. (Not a first edition or autographed, etc.)

Inconsistent shipping speeds from different vendors.

A More Sympathetic Approach?

ThriftBooks declines to sell books at a lower price even when they have an excess inventory. Some may call this smart business; others may note that most of the country has been through a difficult financial period with high unemployment, high underemployment and the loss of small businesses. People who were not impacted by the financial stress of the past 18 months likely have the ability to pay full price for new books or high prices for used books. Others struggle to pay the "low" prices (higher than other used book stores that are not online) at Thrift. When Thrift has a clear excess of inventory of a certain book, would it really impact their profits to price some of that inventory more aggressively? Just a question for consideration.

ThriftBooks has a misleading practice…

ThriftBooks has a misleading practice of offering books for sale at prices that are not available on the web site. Despite my alerting them to the errors, they seem content to continue the fraudulent practice.

Additionally, books are often overpriced when dozens of copies are available. It is ThriftBooks' prerogative to do this, but this does not improve customer satisfaction because it appears they are trying to take advantage of buyers.

In addition, when ThriftBooks receives a negative review, it sends a form reply that apologizes for the inconvenience and offers to correct the problem. Because it is a form reply that is not truly targeted at customer satisfaction, the offer fails to address the complaint. I.e., I doubt ThriftBooks has any intention of changing its deceptive pricing which is the problem I note in thiis review.

Average at best

Generally overpriced despite surplus inventory and mediocre delivery times for the amount charged for shipping and handling (obviously a second profit source).

Books are overpriced in general

Books are overpriced in general. Even when you have ample inventory, you price them all well above the used book market. I bought more from you when I could get a book with shipping for about $3. Now, most are closer to $7. Also, your ads boast free shipping or discounts that are illusory because the total cost works out the same as without the discount. The free book is a decent gesture, but the shipping is still high (I.e., the book is not free).

Thrift Books asked me to review them via email. I did, as you can read above. Then they replied, sort of. The reply was non-responsive to the issues I identified in my review. They apologized for "any inconvenience". This suggests to me that they sent a canned response rather than read the review, which further suggests that they do not really want feedback. They just want to change the review to a fully positive one.

I gave three stars because this company is not a bad company, just a mediocre one that does not pay attention to its customers' feedback.
