Horrible company and not worth the time. They have no instructions on some of these tests they give you. Waste of time.
A really awful company for casual work.
A really awful company for casual work.
They have so many promises of paid work and it looks professional. But don't fall for it. You have to go through so many loopholes it just isn't worth it for your time.
Pass this test, pass that test, sign up for this platform, sign up for that platform, log your hours on that platform, register your details on another platform and log your work hours there etc etc etc. Pay rates are well below minimum wage too.
Really really bad given that it s actually trying to get you to train AI. Avoid like the plague. So many better platforms out there for casual workers.
work hours reduced
work hours reduced, meaning that payout also reduced. but its still fair for me. but you guys should increase work hours for better payouts
Unserious business
The company, Appen Crowgen, seemed like the fantastic place where you could work remotely and earn good money. I personally qualified for 90% of all the projects I was presented with, but never got so much as a single task.**
The Crowgen App is a waste of your time, and I can only recommend looking for a more serious job provider, whether it's AI training, ad evaluations, text translations, or similar. There are plenty of serious companies that actually give you jobs.
Very sketchy
Very sketchy, I’m so glad I never completed onboarding and never gave them any financial information and only gave them an email created solely for this app.
DO NOT GIVE THESE FRAUDS YOUR DATA OR…
DO NOT GIVE THESE FRAUDS YOUR DATA OR ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION!!
Due to heavy marketing on social media and the promise of available work, I signed up for Crowdgen. I have approximately 2-3 years experience on other AI freelancing platforms, but this is by far the least professional and sketchy one I've ever had the misfortune of being on. Their onboarding and support is laughable. They take all of your personal and sensitive data, but you get nothing in return. My ID verification has been stuck for 2+ months, so while it worked for the initial project I signed up for, I cannot apply for any further projects. I have tried over the course of 2+ months to contact support, but honestly, the bot makes more sense than they do. They seem woefully unknowledgeable to the point that I've had to spoon feed them operational practices and they still don't seem to understand.
As far as I can ascertain, they are collecting data and offer no meaningful service or work opportunities. They mismanage all aspects and if they can't handle basic onboarding, I'd hate to see the dumpster fire of getting actually paid (if you even manage to get onto a project).
There's a rise in these charlatans, specifically for this industry, that promise work, but do nothing other than data mine for profit. Stay away.
EDIT 4/10/25:
I have contacted support twice to ask them to delete my data, and they have not responded. This is against data protection laws in my own country and their country of operation.
Appen/Crowdgen is now inept and untrustworthy
Appen (now known as Crowdgen) used to be good for me until about mid 2023 or Jan/Feb 2024. I joined Appen in Jan 2020 and worked on some good paying projects, and their processes and support were quite efficient until the last 1.5-2 years approx. In the last 1.5 years especially, they have been a lot more inept and untrustworthy operation, with no actual work/ projects it seems like, and have now deactivated my account.
I am suspicious they have taken/used my data with these ID "retests" for a supposed project, in the last few weeks. This has happened several times in the last 1.5 years, getting an email about a project apparently, but then a bit later on, "this project doesn't exist", something like that. Only now, after calling out their BS and inept behaviour recently, in one of the support tickets, they have now deactivated my account.
NOT WORTH THE EFFORT ANYMORE
I have worked on several projects with Crowdgen (Appen) since June of 2019. The first five years were pretty good. The work was not always steady, but for the most part I was happy with it. I was paid on time and rarely had any issues. But in October of 2024 the platform changed, and it has been downhill ever since. Little work is available, and I am rejected for the few projects I do apply for. Today I received an email asking me to verify my address. Really? After working with them for more than 6 years. These days it feels more like a data mining operation than a job. No thanks, I just deleted my account.
Frustrating Experience with Little to Show for It
I had high hopes when I signed up, but my experience so far has been deeply disappointing. The onboarding process was long and demanding, involving multiple qualification tasks. I eventually joined the Whatcom project, which promised access to various tasks paid per HITT—but in reality, those opportunities have been extremely scarce.
Then, in March 2025, my account was suddenly flagged as "under review," despite having already submitted and verified my government ID. This status has completely blocked access to new projects. I’ve submitted several support tickets asking for clarification or guidance, but the responses have been vague, unhelpful, and frankly dismissive.
After investing countless hours into onboarding and qualification tests, I’ve received no meaningful return. The lack of transparency and communication is unacceptable. Unless things drastically improve, I wouldn’t recommend signing up—it’s been a waste of time and effort.
Low rate not as shown
You do not get proper training for the tasks. Some evaluations don’t have videos and completely confusing.I worked for the whole month and got only $30, they lie about the rate and what you can earn. They kicked me off the project after a month and kept on sending me emails about the project while my account was deactivated. Not worth anyone’s time honestly.
I was cheated and now totally disapointed
My account is under rewiev almost half of a year. I sent emails them few times and got same automatically answer, something like "we working on it and ask for your patience".
Besides I was cheated on one project and they dont care. The curator of the project was their employee Crystal Lee (cli@ appen dot com). I wrote to her and I wrote to Appen support few times but all my requests about this case was ignored. It was good platform few years ago but now I'm totally disapointed

I have a great experience with the company. However, I waited for - I think maybe more than a half of a year to kick off the project. I was patience, and I was waiting. I made all the assessment. I recommend you to wait for the kick-off, it will worth for it. I am really grateful to work for them.
Account deactivation with no explanations.
Appen's glory ended years ago.
The bad reviews you will read here are all true. I'm writing this review to denounce their awful service.
One day they decided to suspend my account for violation of their CrowdGen Contributor Standards and not explaining more specifically. The only thing I did was to apply for a project, while i was traveling in another country. Probably standard 4 was violated? This standard is "Contributors must be located where they claim to be. Falsifying location for project eligibility is not permitted." If they had data of my location while applying to the project, then maybe automatically it hit to their system that it was a violation. But there was no falsification on purpose, certainly. I was traveling. Either way, I am not even certain if that was the case, I can only assume! So, when I wrote to them, asking them to explain to me what Standard was violated and why, and if there was anything i could do to avoid future issues, they only responded automatically with the following: "Regrettably, we made the business decision to deactivate your account at this time due to a violation of the CrowdGen Contributor Standards.
If you believe that this decision was made in error, or you have any questions about our standards, please do not hesitate: our dedicated support team is here to help." Help?? I already did that and no one answered to my questions.
I am not affected by their deactivation, it is something I should have done years ago, since I had stopped working with them. And I stopped because the projects simply weren't working. I mean, were they even real?
I don't expect the company to change, or anything. Appen's past glory of 7-8 years ago will never turn back. I don't even think that the bad reviews will affect them. This is just my only way to respond, and at least here someone will read it and it may be of use to them.
DON'T TEACH A.I THIS B.S
Everything sounds so amazing and enticing. Until something can't be done. You aren't able to change your profile. If you can't change your phone number you can't get paid. Well you have to do a ticket. They waste their time, stringing you along with Bull $hit lies for months. NO, IF there was an issue, then the issue should have been taken care of when it was first brought up. not 5 months after the fact. I was emailing them daily to get paid, for the project i was hired onto. They Send you a PIN number and the project number to work. Well, they will send you 10 emails telling you about it, describing it, elaborating about it, and never give you a pin. When you have sent your 10th email asking about the pin, you will get an email, about something irrelevant. That they sent out an email in regards to something that doesn't pertain to you. So back to the PIN number, you send out another 10 emails, and then nothing happens. Months go by, you still don't have the pin. Then they sound apologetic, but there is no sincerity in their emails. They waste your time! Say that they will pay you. And Never do. I had a project in February. They Never sent payment. I emailed, and nothing. THE WORST COMPANY FOR AI. IT IS NOT WORTH THE STRESS.
Looking for remote work? Check elsewhere.
I have worked at Appen/Crowdgen for over 2 years at the time of writing this. To be short and simple, it's independent contract work that lets workers explore numerous online tasks that they can complete to receive compensation; there are sometimes physical, on-site tasks available which require online logging as well. Within the first year, I've enjoyed working towards accomplishing these objectives; the work can be tedious, but it was worth it for the decent pay. However, I have officially decided to give the site/work experience this rating for incompetence, inconsiderateness, and unfairness.
After graduating from college, I have been searching on the side for an actual job both locally and online for the past three-and-a-half years to earn better income and improve my work experience, but I have had no luck—just rejection letters or lack of updates. I've found Appen/Crowd Appen during this time, which I was happy to be a part of after being accepted into their platform and helped break me into remote work.
After the first year, working in the company has been a bumpy road, and it has only worsened overtime. In the dashboard where contractors can sign up for assignments, I have applied to many projects, but almost all of those have either not responded about updates, or they do reach back after months just to say that the project is either full or has been closed indefinitely. I literally have had over ten projects waiting for updates just to be either closed or never heard back from for months. Just recently, one of these projects, which I've been working on for almost a year and was receiving decent compensation, has just announced closure. This same project, which has been in an almost six-month long hiatus, has been emailing contractors for months saying that work will continue the month after again and again, just to ultimately reach back to us about their killing of the project–explaining the reason that "work data has reached its quota and therefore has decided to be completed and shut down." If this is the case, why not have let the contractors, who have been waiting patiently, know months prior instead of waiting?
I sit here writing this with a list of applications for other projects on the site's dashboard that have yet to hear back from, and I've received another email (a total of three so far) stating the closure of a project. I am working double time to find work in another field, and I will hopefully find another company that can have work available for its contractors or at least can inform them of updates and showcase competence and respect for its workers. I am done with Appen/Crowd Appen.
If you are looking for remote work, please continue searching elsewhere. You will only find yourself waiting and waiting like a fool just to be either abandoned or brushed off like they've forgotten that you joined the platform. I have learned recently that there are other independent contracting sites/companies who offer this type of work but have a more professional behavior towards its contractors.
Joke Platform
Simply put, CrowdGen is a joke. Don’t waste your time on this platform.
They list projects that are either already inactive or completely inaccessible. You’ll be asked to go through a series of qualifications, only to be told afterward that the project has been closed.
Even if you meet all their listed requirements—such as location-specific criteria—and successfully pass the qualification, you may still be denied access to the project. If you try to appeal, the helpdesk will respond vaguely, saying they can’t tell you the reason due to internal policies.
They refused to pay and they care even less!
where's my $110 ?
They take WEEKS to answer and they say you only have 72hours to reply to our email..
WHY/WHAT THE HELL IS THAT ????
YOU OWE ME MONEY!!
Account Deactivated Without Explanation
I was deactivated from CrowdGen with a vague accusation of violating Contributor Standards, which I firmly believe is false. I followed all guidelines and was never warned or informed of any issue beforehand.
When I asked for clarification, they refused to provide any details, making it impossible to understand or respond. The lack of transparency and accountability is deeply unprofessional.
I would advise others to be cautious when working with them. If they decide to cut you off, it seems they won’t give you a fair chance to defend yourself or even explain what went wrong.
