Five Oaks Lodge Norfolk - Very Disappointing
Sykes Cottages were very good to deal with and we have no complaints with them. We were disappointed with the lodge we rented in Norfolk.
We often visit Norfolk but this time my grandson and son preferred somewhere with a hot tub, which limited our relatively late booking.
It was quite a sunny week. The website photographs looked impressive but our first impressions were not good when we pulled up onto a very neglected frontage with weeds everywhere, compared to nearby lodges.
The heat hit us as we opened the front door, realising we had booked a very large 'portacabin' made of metal, with almost a wall of glass facing south. We rushed to open the sliding glass doors and were hit by an invasion of flies. We saw two fly-sprays, kindly left by the previous hirers, but we had to buy lots of those old fashioned sticky tapes to hang up everywhere, plus more fly spray. We had to spend the week using the doors like an 'airlock' - quickly shutting them on moving outside and back in. We used the effective air con quite a lock, marooned inside. On one side of the lodge we had lake areas, but no views of them, and on the other a field of cows. Walking around and found a tired and seemingly deserted water ski centre. We asked at the cafe/ bar near the centre of this large lodge site for milk but they said they had no shop. The nearest shop is several miles away.
The property was clean and well equipped but we found a broken glass in the cupboard and I had to refit a detached toilet seat lid. The dishwasher needed salt and rinse aid but they had none. Many of the venetian blinds, these on the small windows only, were damaged. There were only three place mats, necessary for the plastic table cloth, and only two wine glasses.
The TV Sky didn't work and all we could get was a very weak Netflix signal that kept buffering and freezing. The sound system took a while to work out how to use it - no visible instructions. (In my work I advise people on all everyday technical useage)
No information about the cooker or about tourism in the area. The floors all creaked and all the wooden doors squeaked. No hooks for coats on any doors. The huge clock on the wall didn't work. The bed for the 4+2 accom. is in the corner of this open plan lodge, with no separate facilities. It was very sunny all week but there was no awning or large shade on the decking area. The large expanse of glass meant that the seating area of the lodge was very hot. We went out each day.
Sandringham was a great day out, with lots to see to please most ages.
