They have become increasingly greedy

They have become increasingly greedy. Previously, there was a monthly fee that granted access to group lessons. However, they have now transitioned to charging for each individual group lesson, even for existing members. It is important to note that these group lessons, when they were free, were not meant to be taken seriously. Regardless of your singing ability, the instructors would still praise you. Charging for a format that used to be free feels like a deceptive scam. The focus used to be on the group experience, but that dynamic quickly changes when you are required to pay for something that lacks value.

Misleading Promos and Coupons

I had a coupon code for 2 months of free lessons to get started, which I used on January 1, 2023. I entered the code and it was accepted. One month into having my account, I get billed even though I still had one more free month with the coupon! Talk about running a scam!

I felt at my obligation to write a…

I felt at my obligation to write a review. I set up a lesson with a teacher by the name of Ebony we communicated by phone to set up a time for the trial lesson. Every time we talk she never called she just made excuses. She was unreliable to even set up a trial lesson so I canceled it but I did have lessons with a guy by the name of Jabari Keyton some time before this he told me that I should pay him directly because take lessons was messing up his money, and I always pay for my lessons in advance and I paid him $430 for a package of lessons. At the time he was a struggling individual. I could tell as he was a Uber driver as well when I paid him this money a week later, he told me he was moving out of town for an opportunity,I asked him for my refund he told me there’s no refunds as he was already out of state so I couldn’t get my hands on him so the saga continues. He came up like a nice, intelligent guy, but he was a con artist the whole time.

Inconsistent and disorganized

Inconsistent and disorganized. I tried a bit of everything. Not all coaches are on the same page. One coach will explain what a vocal technique is and another will have a completely opposite view. This only confuses the issue of trying to learn and understand the skill. Some coaches are just out of it. I had some during live lessons turn you off and when you finished the song, they woke up. Real encouraging!!. All in all, if you spend money it is probably a waste and if you spend time, you will probably be disappointed.

Please avoid

Please avoid. I signed up for their promotion deal to get 3 classes for a certain price and then they charged me the same price for ONE class. They would not acknowledge their mistakes
or rectify the issue in the system and said that the price was for 1 class although they still have the promotion ongoing. Buyer beware!!!

I was sick and had to cancel lessons…

I was sick and had to cancel lessons for a day. A student for some reason reported to TakeLessons that I was severely ill and unable to teach. TakeLessons then removed a different student from my roster without consent from either me or my student and disabled my profile, all without contacting me. This is severely problematic and negligent. They claimed it was due to "technical issues." They added the student back, but would not remove their fees to make up for it, as I requested.

Avoid it as much as you can

I booked lessons on TakeLessons 2 weeks ago. The teacher did not respond, which is fine. I contacted the support team to ask for a refund of my credits; received an automated email that says we will get back to you.
I waited another week, still no response. I sent another request for a refund, also no respond; just the automated email.

Exceptionally poor and inconsistent service

I had taking a sewing class and wanted to take another class with the same instructor. I received a email message from Take Lessons indicating that I had a 20% off promotion and needed to contact them to acquire it. That should have been the first red flag...I called and the first individual claimed to know nothing about it; even after the confirmed the name of the sender. The second individual I spoke with claimed to know but proceeded ask for personal information that certainly had nothing to do with why I had called but would certainly compromise my security and give them unnecessary information to my financial information. He claimed that I must provide that information over the phone to get a promotion code: nothing, certainly not a website like this is worth that. He hung up but certainly became concerned that there is something fraudulent going on with this company. I like the instructor but I certainly do not want to work with this platform again. I asked her if she used any other platform to teach. Otherwise, I am definitely going elsewhere.

A VERY GREEDY company!

A VERY GREEDY company!! In the past it was easy and to sign up with take lessons. I was also able to speak to a real administration person over the phone for help ! Well, not anymore! Recently I signed up my daughter again for voice lessons and it was confusing to say the least with no real person to help. After the sign up apparently I was tricked to sign up for some subscription. There was nothing saying that I was going to have to pay for anything (except what I already paid for). All I remember is some image popping up in front of my submit payment and I clicked on it to get it out of the way so I can finish signing up. Or I clicked on it after I paid to get the pop up it out of my way. There were no emails to me confirming that I signed up for a paid subscription at all ever!!! Nothing. So then I find out I was being charged $14.99 a month for something I never used. When I requested a refund and explained what happened all they were willing to do was refund me ONE payment. Yeah, this company is RICH! Yet they are so greedy they couldn't even refund the other $14.99! Yeah so no longer will I use this company. I may just go around them and continue to PAY the teacher what they deserve and not let this greedy company take a profit from them. I suggest everyone do this. It's better for us and the teacher. Take out the greedy middleman!!!

Adult students beware of inflexible policies and greedy teachers!

If you are an adult student, the policies on this site are intolerable and unfeasible. The music teachers use this site because if you attempt to cancel even a minute past the 24 hour "cancellation period" you lose your money, unless you happen to have one of a VERY few teachers, who will offer a makeup lesson.
I had a teacher who stole hundreds of dollars because the lessons are prepaid and I had some issues come up that were beyond my control. Recently, I contacted he teacher 20 minutes outside the cancellation window and she deliberately ignored me to ensure that she would get her money, even though I had to miss my lesson. I contacted takelessons, con and they would not intervene on my behalf. The owners of this site care NOTHING for the students.

teacher=good, customer experience=bad

The instructor I had was very good, patient and clearly skilled. It's the communications from the company that I had challenges with. First, their online dashboard for scheduling and payment is TERRIBLE. I couldn't communicate with my instructor through it, so we just exchanged email addresses and phone numbers.
Second, they sent me so much email that I couldn't manage it and stopped looking at what they were sending.
Third, they offered me a 30-day free trial of their group lessons, which I didn't use and didn't realize I was signed up for. It turned into a year membership, but since I was also taking lessons with my instructor, I sadly assumed it was part of the fees. I took lessons with my instructor for about five months and decided to end. At that point, I cancelled my membership....or so I thought. The group lessons membership fees didn't end and I noticed them on my credit card six months later (shame on me for not closely checking my credit card bill - eek). I called to ask for a refund of those fees only from the point I stopped taking lessons, or six months. They only returned 3 months, and I paid for a whole year and never used it. I'm annoyed and think their customer service and platform stink.

Glitchy platform, very poor consumer policies

The teachers (independent contractors) I have found are excellent. This review is of the company takelessons rather than for any individual teacher.

The takelessons platform is glitchy. After one such glitch that resulted in my lessons not showing up (preventing me from logging into my online classroom or even seeing my schedule of lessons), takelessons refused to even partially refund the lesson that was interrupted by the app malfunctioning. The malfunction was apparently due to some kind of reconfiguration. The phone rep said the company *was* aware that the app wasn’t working but consumers weren’t notified. The company’s rep cited policy that instructors themselves have to come up with an alternative online classroom if the takelessons classroom isn’t working, and further policy that a lesson has to be canceled in these circumstances to avoid paying for the lesson. I prepaid the lesson and was out 15 minutes (1/4 of the time), because of the app not working as it should. The company indicated that it isn’t financially responsible for that loss of my time and suggested I ask my teacher for a credit instead. In my opinion that is a very shady business practice.

Take Lessons want to Take Money

My one star rating is for the platform Take Lessons, not my instructor. I have an excellent instructor. Take Lessons has harrassed me to no end to give them access to my credit card. I pay for my lessons ahead of time and as I can afford, but that's not good enough for these greedy sons of b*****s. So they cancelled my spot with my instructor. I was perfectly happy paying for it as I could afford to it. Never had a lapse until they canceled me. So screw you Take Lessons. I dont need you. And you've lost a customer.

I feel like I was scammed

I feel like I was scammed. I purchased lessons for my mom and the day she was supposed to come, I get an email from the teacher saying she's not cancelling. I didn't know I was signing up for recurring lessons. I thought it was $30 for 3 lessons. Then I check my credit card and they charged me $140!!!

My youngest son (7yo) took chess…

My youngest son (7yo) took chess lessons using Takelessons. Well after a year, his teacher passed away unexpectedly. It was a terrible time for us. We just realized that Takelessons took our remaining balance because we didn't request a refund within 90 days of purchasing the lessons. They send reminders for everything else, but not in this instance. So $60 gone and a 7yo little boy still grieving his teacher. Needless to say, we will not be using that platform again.

Great teacher, poor platform

First off, this review is not for my ASL teacher Kimber. She's amazing, fun, responds quickly to emails, and overall fantastic. My lackluster review is for the takelessons site itself. I find it shady that you have to send a request to change a recurring schedule. I tried to change from a 45 minute lesson weekly to a 30 minute lesson weekly. Instead, they double-booked me for a 45 and a 30 minute lesson, overlapping times, weekly. It was a huge pain for me and for my teacher to figure it out and there was no way for me to rectify it on my own; I had to send a request to takelessons to have them make the correction. Any time you have to "request" to cancel a recurring event is suspicious to me. It's just not a good customer experience. I was lucky enough to find a great teacher here, but if she ever left then I'd be done with takelessons.

They try to monopolize

They tried to to monopolize the lesson market by threatening teachers to not accept students who hadn’t signed up to their company or who aren’t members.
I had TWO TEACHERS WHO REFUSED ME LESSONS OVER THAT. If you think they don’t care about teachers this brings it up to a whole new level where they not only don’t care about teachers they don’t CARE ABOUT ANYONE. PERIOD!! I had quit Takelessons and wanted to continue taking lessons and was told that they could not continue. One teacher did continue but later told me he was afraid of losing his body of students.

Unsafe and Doesn't Value Instructors

Yes, this company was a saving grace during Covid but almost no students before or after that. Plus....

• Teachers are charged a 40% commission on lessons

• Students are charged an additional $$ service fee on top of the session rate for each lesson

• Students are also charged a monthly fee for belonging to TL

• Teachers have to be background checked every year at their expense.... but they DON'T EVEN TAKE THE LAST NAME of students.... the people the put you in sessions with - extremely dangerous!

• If you have a problem with a student (which I did - lewd sexual comments) TL will do nothing - they "can't"... they don't have the person's full name - first name, email and phone according to the company

Personally, I had 71 - 4 and 5 star reviews an then this dirty man left a 1 star review because I refused to do anymore session with him - MY ACCOUNT was cancelled - not his!

*NOTE: I have an email thread from the company which clearly stated everything above

There are so many other platforms to find work and ones that treat everyone with respect. You can really do better!
