From basics from 101 to Advance

I decided that before undertaking a major electrical upgrade to my C350 it would be a good idea to learn more about marine wiring standards. I thought that as a master electrician with 50+ plus years of industrial control systems I really didn't need to start with the basics, but why not. I'm glad I did as there are lots of small nuisance that you don't have to consider in the industrial world. The course kept my attention and was a very enjoyable experience. Hats off to both Nigel and Jan for keeping it interesting and useful.

I have recommended this platform to many of my fellow sailors.

Recommended for every boat owner.

Having bought a second hand yacht and been somewhat shocked by the state of the wiring this course is literally a life saver. Any owner needs to follow this course before doing any DIY on their boat or even commissioning work from a “professional”.
The first few lessons with recap of basic electrical science was a slight drag but then covering the differences for marine work, connectors, wire sizing, colours and current protection made it all very worthwhile.

I needed serious help!

I am a complete neophyte when it comes to electricity. When we bought a 1997 blue water boat in 2025 I knew I wanted a modern/dependable/efficient electrical system and the Boat How To Marine Electric 101 course enlighted me to "What right should look like." That got me started to tear every wire out of our boat with the intent to rewire everything. Once there (now what?), I needed help. Called Jan requesting a mechanism for consultation. He immediately obliged by connecting me to Matthias (the newest BHT partner) who video-called with me once and set out to rediagram my entire new Victron config, recommended pieces of control equipment I was missing and answered EVERY question I texted to him in quick succession. Matthias is my GO TO guy who is enabling me to finish this otherwise massive DIY project and has taken me from plebe to marine electric graduate with confidence the system is going to work properly. Further, Matthias and Jan are retail suppliers in Europe of everything lithium. Stuff that could be be sourced in the US they can source in Europe. AMAZING SERVICE. Anyone hesitant about marine electric or DIY electric would be well advised the best $$ spent on your project will be this course and/or BHT direct consulting. My wife and I are absolutly amazed at their service, 100% personalized analysis and recommendations. Diesel is next! Thanks a million Nigel, Jan and Matthias! Can't say enugh good words. 10 stars.

Re-watching lessons is tops

Being able to re-watch the lessons to catch more of the details is great. I'm not in the classes for a grade; I'm trying to learn how to take care of the electrical system on my boat. The lessons are well paced and the graphics are really helpful.

The only negative would be that the written material in not in a PDF format that can be downloaded and referred to easily.

Hi Ian, Thanks a lot for your kind words! We are looking into ways to automatically transform the lecture notes into PDFs, but unfortunately we have not (yet) found a good way to do this. In the meantime, you should be able to save the page as PDF in your browser. (You might have to go via print -> save as PDF.)

I have more than 20 years of experience…

I have more than 20 years of experience designing AC systems in buildings, and I was surprised by how much DC systems differ from AC systems. Knowledge, shared by Nigel and Jan, is elementary to understand and deep enough to be able to design and install your own system on a boat. They also share the most common mistakes you can find in a boat's electrical system, especially with new LiFePo4 batteries, and inox washers and nuts in a conductor path. Additionally, they highlight issues such as using too big fuses for the given cable or an undersized cable for a given consumer. There is also an emphasis on following standards and rules, which results in a safe and long-lasting installation. As a result of that knowledge, I was able to redesign and reinstall the electrical system on my own boat. I highly recommend it to everyone, including experts.

Perfect match of huge expertise and breathtaking content teaching and illustration

I am so amazed by this new course concept and its implementation: The professional contents paired with breath taking illustrations and an easy to understand explanation. The combination of Jans and Nigels expertise, adding competences to each other and forming a perfect training package, prepared with a lot of effort, is really unique in the marine world. Even my wife started to participate in the courses to understand electrics better, although she had no clue about it before. For me as engineer and trained hobby electrician the basics were not boring but quickly added a lot expertise of how to design and install el. systems and especially of what the critical issues are to take care of on an existing yacht. The price of the course is certainly justified for the added value it brings, which many amateur YouTube videos will never achieve.

Lessons are meticulously prepared

Lessons are meticulously prepared and researched. The 3D modeling of the engine parts and visual aides presented in the videos are very well done. Everything is very well explained and also goes into depth - so comprehensible and interesting to both novices and experts alike. Highly recommended!

Congratulations on preparing a really…

Congratulations on preparing a really well thought out course. Your videos were well produced and I love that you produced them on your boat! The written chapter notes matched and supplemented the videos and your questions on the quizzes were a good review to make sure that the learning has settled into usable knowledge.
I read through the ABYC Marine Electrical Certification and was pleased at the alignment of the ABYC course material and Electronics 101-it pleased me to note the consistency.
I now know what I need to know as the lead rigger at Atlantic Boat Company to be able to connect and disconnect mast wiring.
Thank you again for a well done course that was a pleasure to take!

I designed my Solar, LiFePO4, 5k Inverter system after the course

For my boat project I installed a 2kW solar system with 16kW LiFePO4 battery and a 5k inverter. I learned all the details on how to do this, what to look for, best practices etc. from BoatHowTo. All the information and much more is in one place in easily digestible chapters, often with animation and supporting media. I had three certified electricians look over my installation over a period of a year and every one was impressed by the design and implementation. The quality of the courses speak for itself.

From a reasonable amature to a confident expert. Super excellent training!

I already knew quite a bit about boat electrics. But I wanted to deepen my knowledge, understand even better the 'why' behind best practises, understand the ISO standards and the reasoning.
BoatHowTo delivered exactly that. It gave outstanding value. I got super valuable knowledge and background information. Their online response to questions is of great value as well.
After the training I confidently undertook a large LiFePo4 upgrade and rewiring on m boat.
Absolutel recommend BoatHowTo .. simple the best source of knowledge on these topics!

I home built my electric inboard…

I home built my electric inboard powered 25’ sailboat over the past 4 years. When it came time to figure out the electrics for the boat I found Nigel and his new Boat How To site. I learned how to lay out buss bars, wire size and what fuse protection, switching and batteries. At the end of the course I learned how to use internet tools to do a full schematic. Excellent course!
