True Sustainability

Amazing experience - my son's waterproof jacket zip was damaged. Used Berghaus's repair service for free, just paying for postage, and the jacket was returned within a couple of weeks with a new zip. This is true sustainability and not green washing.

A totally brilliant app

A totally brilliant app! I had the free version for ages but have recently signed up for the paid 'Plus' version and I have found it so helpful. I use it every day for meditations, talks, courses and challenges, sleep aids, music and much more. There are live sessions of very good quality and the app always seems to work well without any tech glitches. Highly recommend for anyone wishing to improve their mental health and/or develop their personal spiritual practice.

Water should be re-nationalised

Water should be re-nationalised. In 2023, Southern Water polluted for 317,285 hours. The company is in such financial straights that it was facing a dividend ban which came in after the credit rating agency Fitch downgraded their debt.
Southern Water has paid out a total of £2.3 billion in dividends since privatisation in 1989.
The company is owned by infrastructure investment funds. The largest stake (62%) is held by funds managed by Australian firm Macquarie, who previously owned Thames Water. Other key fund managers include US firm JP Morgan.
Net debts have reached £5.7 billion. It was privatised with no debts.
27% of your bill is spent servicing Southern Water's debts.
And my bill has doubled!

Love the ethos

Love the ethos - using recycled materials is so important. I like the fact that the company is UK based and that it has a strong ethical base including supporting different charities. My rugs are very nice and I hope to use them for years to come.

My son bought me a Tea Blending Workshop voucher for two via Buyagift, delivered by Bird & Blend Tea Co. The redemption process was fairly easy and we got it booked in quickly. The workshop was great fun - would highly recommend it.

All round decent service

Great advice from staff in the new Horsham store, as I was buying items without much prior knowledge (collapsible walking poles, waterproof gloves and lightweight day boots) and needed lots of questions answered. The £5 annual membership is good value, staff were friendly, and the choice of products instore was good. It's great that they take cash too, maintaining customer choice in a time where this is being eroded. My only criticism so far is they send too many emails!

Great service

Great service. Kits are well put together with clear instructions, and the range of tests offered is good. Samples are always processed quickly and insights are very useful for health monitoring. Customer service is excellent - very responsive and positive.

Allows medical discrimination

A great idea in principle but they allow host farms to specify volunteers are vaccinated against COVID. This is a form of medical discrimination and does not fit with their supposed ethos (organic/healthy). When challenged they did not even consider the issue.

No results!

I ordered this test for my gut flora. When it arrived I was surprised to see no instructions for packaging up and posting the sample to London, and just a basic plastic envelope. On looking at the Royal Mail guidelines for biological materials I was concerned about labelling as the company did not supply any special stickers for the package. In the end I put everything in the original box with bubble wrap and told the PO that it was a swab test. I paid for 24 hour tracked.
A few days later I received an email saying my sample had not been processed as 'it spent too long in transit'. I questioned this as I knew it had arrived at the main office within the 24 hours. The Customer Service responded quickly and told me it had to be sent on to a lab in Germany, which I knew from reading the previous reviews, however they did not specify where and how the delay occurred.
I was offered another test free of charge or a refund, and since there was no explanation about the delay or guarantee it would not happen again, I chose a refund. The kit money was returned immediately, so I just lost the £8 postage money, and my time and effort.
Very disappointing as it was a waste - I never got my sample analysed so never got any results. I will be looking elsewhere now

Washing machine door broke after less than a year's use

We bought a £500 washing machine for our 21 year old son for his first flat, and just a few days before the 1 year warranty expired, the door basically exploded. The glass was broken (through no obvious misuse) and the machine unusable. We passed the info onto our son so he could contact Hoover, which he did but by then it was one day outside of the warranty expiry period. Our son is working 3 jobs to pay his bills and was unable to contact Hoover sooner.
Hoover customer service have basically said that since the machine was outside of the warranty period he would have to buy a new door at a cost of £200, or sign up to a monthly repairs/insurance plan.
This is appalling - a washing machine should last at least 10 years and we had never ever heard of a door failing in this way. Then for a major company with a supposedly good reputation to deny a request for a new part because of fine print is totally rubbish. My son and his flatmate have now been without a working machine for a number of weeks over Christmas and New Year and have no repair coming until 11th January. They do not live near a launderette or have a car.
I will never buy a Hoover product again based on this - that it should break so soon then the lack of customer care shown to my son. Extremely disappointing.

Mindful cooking and eating…

Mindful Chef is a great way to cook healthily if you are not a natural cook (I hate cooking personally!) or lack time, as everything comes pre-measured with a simple recipe to follow. There is a great selection of recipes every week, with sustainably sourced ingredients and eco-friendly packaging wherever possible. There is flexibility to choose different numbers of recipes each week for different numbers of people, and different schedules (e.g weekly or fortnightly deliveries). We choose both the meaty dishes (for husband and son) and vegan ones for myself. I am vegetarian, but all the Mindful Chef veggie recipes are vegan and even the meat eaters in my house enjoy them.
You can also choose ready meals - a good speedy alternative to cooking from scratch - and add on's such as healthy snacks and smoothie mixes.
The service is good - any problems (and there haven't been any major ones to speak of) are quickly resolved.
The company has good ethics, is a certified B corp, and organises things like an annual beach clean up. They tell you about the producers of their ingredients and seem to have a genuine concern for the environment with a desire to keep improving.
I would recommend them.
