Action Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime, and takes crime and information reports on behalf of the police and gives advice and fraud prevention guidance. Action Fraud does not have investigation powers, however, the reports taken by Action Fraud are sent to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB) which is run by the City of London Police, the national lead force for fraud. The NFIB collates and analyses intelligence on fraud, identifying viable lines of enquiry and developing packages for distribution to a force for investigating.
It is the responsibility of forces to assess the information referred to them and decide whether or not to commence an investigation based on the viability of leads and other criteria that they take into account when assessing cases. Once a report is transferred from Action Fraud, any resulting enforcement action lies with the receiving Police Force who should contact the victim with an update. If a viable lead is not identified, the crime details are retained by the NFIB.
