I seem to be the exception here given that my experience with Westland was exemplary. I bought a Kent and Stowe lawn edger approx 12 months ago and it broke. I contacted customer services at Westland Horticulture as they are the parent company. Daniel who dealt with the problem could not have been more helpful and arranged a credit with the Kent and Stowe web site so that I could order a replacement First contact yesterday afternoon and order placed 30 mins ago. To my mind this is how customer services should work If only!!! So five stars to Daniel and Westland Horticulture

I messaged you (Danial) because the pack of Bird Peckish Balls were smashed. You kept on about its the shops fault. I also enquired about your yellow feeder featured on the Peckish wrapper and you said you would send me one, ....instead....you sent me a cheap looking bullet shape feeder nothing like the yellow one and the balls too were smashed as it wasnt wrapped sufficiently. I have requested to return and you replace it with the yellow one but you dont reply. The birds don't go near the clear one as it scares them and they can't grip it. Please show you care and send us the yellow one. I buy the balls regularly so I am a valued customer.
Thank you for your fast reply I received today. Just to confirm it wasn't clarified by Danial that it would be different to the yellow one featured otherwise I would have said no to the bullet one which is now £1.99 in B&M because nobody wants it. It looks unsightly in the tree and no birds go to it, I think its maybe hard for them to clutch on to it. I had been looking for the yellow one on the packet. I wasn't sure whether it was filled or not.
Thank you for your kind offer of the giftcard and trying to help me get the one featured on the wrapper. It arrived this morning. It really makes a difference to us customers when customers really care like yourselves THANK YOU again.

The lawn weed killer dried out almost the entire lawn, yet the dandelions stayed as green and stubborn as ever. About 95% of the grass is dead, but the weeds I actually wanted gone are still thriving. I wouldn’t take this product again even if it were free.

I brought Westland Moss Master 400sqmtr. I also brought their recommended spreader. But, having followed the instructions fully, the moss lapped it up and grew greener whilst the grass wilted and died. I reverted back to my previously used moss killer which did the trick and killed the moss. But my lawn has been left with huge dead spots - it looks awful! It is going to have to be reseeded. Wont be using it again!

I searched for 'John Innes' compost. I bought this J I from westland. Before I go on,let me explain what John Innes is... It is a 'formula' not a brand or logo. It was developed in the 1930's. and is mafe up of Loam, peat (not peat substitute ) lime, grit and sand ,and fertilizers.
This bag , when I opened it looked like the contents of a vacume cleaner bag. and that is NO exageration. It was NOT 'open' and19 certainly did not look like it had any grit or sharp sand in it.
Seems to me that westland think more of so called saving the planet than they do obeying the rules of the John Innes foundation.
I wil never again buy anything with the name "Westland" on it.
If you want proper John Innes soil based compost I would suggest you look elseware.

It's very interesting reading these reviews of the Westland multipurpose compost. It has been my go to compost for well over 10 years.
However, this year it is awful. Dries out very quickly and the mushrooms/toadstools everywhere!
I emailed Westland to complain and I was sent a response making me think it was just me - obviously not seeing the many similar complaints.
They did send me a gift voucher which was appreciated but I won't be buying Westland again - such a shame as their compost used to be first rate.

Only buy Westland John Innes Peat-free Multi-purpose Compost if you want to grow mushrooms!!
It really is poor quality, tomatoes, peppers, etc., are nowhere near as good as previous years when I used B&Q's cheapest!
There are mushrooms growing in virtually every plant pot in the greenhouse and out on the patio pots. One bag I opened had a mass of fungi 'roots' it looked like a spiders web.
They obviously use spent mushroom compost as part of the mix but I would have expected it to b sterilised first.

Used the product four times on a few small patches of weeds . They die off a little but within a week they just bounce back . Hopeless , quite frankly it's more effective to just pee on them.

I’m still suffering the consequences of using six bags of their contaminated multi purpose compost three months ago. All my seedlings failed, despite prefect growing conditions. I’m still getting horrible little mushrooms growing in all the indoor and outdoor pots that contain this compost (but not in any of the pots that don’t). And worst of all, every indoor pot that I used this compost on is massively infested with fungus gnats. Again, this only affects the plants I potted up or re-potted in the spring with the compost sold by Westland. God only knows where they dredge up this filthy muck, and it’s an absolute disgrace that they think it’s ok to sell it to customers, and then refuse to accept any responsibility afterwards.
+++++++
Just a note about the reply I received below. Firstly, I complained about this issue direct to them three months ago. They fobbed me off, refused to issue a refund, and essentially blamed me for all the mushrooms in my pots. Multi purpose compost either has multiple purposes, or it doesn’t. If it’s not suitable for indoor pots, then it shouldn’t say multi purpose on the bag. And as I’ve already said, the only issues I’ve got with fly and mushroom infestations is with their compost. None of my other plants are affected in any way. The fly eggs and fungal spores were in these bags of compost when I bought them, meaning they hadn’t been properly processed, heated, or sterilised. They basically took raw untreated muck scraped off the ground and sold it as premium compost.

Bought 17 x 50 litre bags of Westland Premium Pine Bark Nuggets from a local garden centre. I was looking for a premium product that would not turn into mulch within a couple of years and was attracted by the picture on the bag of the Westland product, I also ran my hand over a bag and could feel what seemed like solid nuggets. It stated on the bag that the product would typically last twice as long as non-premium products.
I noticed when I laid the product that there seemed to be a lot of bark shavings. There also seemed to be a fair amount of white wood which appeared to be splintered pine and bore no relation to nuggets, this detracted from the look af the product when laid. Whilst emptying the bags of product, there was also a fair amount of detritus which was the consistency of coarse soil.
When laid, there were a few areas which needed a little more bark so I purchased another bag. I decided to sort the contents of the bag to determine the actual contents. I used 10 litre buckets for the sorted contents. The results were as follows :-
Bark Nuggets : 30 Litres
Bark Shavings : 10 Litres
White wood : 5 Litres
Detritus : 5 Litres
In my opinion, the white wood has been used to fill out the contents. To be fair, I would expect a little detritus when the contents of the bag have settled. For a so called premium product, I would expect to find a far higher nugget content and would not expect 10 litres of bark shavings. The product did not resemble the depiction on the packaging. Maybe trading standards ought to take a look.
Would not purchase this product again.

So disappointed with this compost. Plants failed to thrive, stunted growth and died. I've never had this problem before, it should be removed from sale.

We bought 20 50l bags of Westlands multi purpose grosure, really disappointed with it, not good quality compost, dries out so quickly so constantly checking plants and nothing wether it be veg or flowers seem to grow well in it. We have also noticed that plants seem to grow deformed and develop wrinkly leaves. Healthy plants potted up into this don't thrive. A costly mistake with this compost that we won't be making again.

Bought 10 tomato bags this year and all the plants are weedy and stunted.
Bags from another company were fine.
Will not be using these again.

We bought two lots of their grass seed...did absolutely nothing! Seeing the other reviews makes me know I am not alone! Total waste of money. Avoid!

I purchased two boxes of Smart Lawn Seed, one this year by mistake and one a couple of years ago. On neither occasion, despite following the instructions on the box and sowing at the correct time of year, have I seen a single blade of new grass. Complaints to the company have been answered with standard rebuttals.
Bought a box of their gro-sure lawn seed and not a single seed germinated. Total waste of money.

Westland have been so amazingly helpful to me. I was sold Westland compost by a local, supposedly reputable company. The seeds came up, but as there was no nutrition in the compost, all my tomatoes and cucumbers etc died. I rang Westland and took a photo of the compost to show them, and they confirmed it was well out of date. The local company refused a refund, accusing me of trying to scam free compost! However, Westland were brilliant and sent me vouchers for more compost, along with tomato and cucumber seeds. So - big thank you to Westland Horticulture! Excellent customer service! (Can't remember date, so put in an estimate)

Have uses this before with no problems. This years batch with added John Innes has adversely affected many of my pot plants particulary fuchsias with yellowing and distorted leaves (the ones not potted with westland are fine. Suspect the problems lies with selected weed killers in law clippings. I will not be using this product again.

Past few years have used Westland Gro sure all purpose compost with no issues. Have recently purchased 3 bags of 50 litres peat free multi purpose with added John Innes. The compost is very coarse, it's smells extremly strongly of Ammonia/ rotting manure. Transplanted chilli seedlings which have effectively curled up and died, also used for French and Runner beans which resulted in only approx 20% germination. Have now emptied bags on a spare area of garden and will spread in borders in winter.
Very disappointed with product.
