I seem to be the exception here given that my experience with Westland was exemplary. I bought a Kent and Stowe lawn edger approx 12 months ago and it broke. I contacted customer services at Westland Horticulture as they are the parent company. Daniel who dealt with the problem could not have been more helpful and arranged a credit with the Kent and Stowe web site so that I could order a replacement First contact yesterday afternoon and order placed 30 mins ago. Smashed Peckish Balls but THANKYOU for caring

I messaged you (Danial) because the pack of Bird Peckish Balls were smashed. You kept on about its the shops fault. I also enquired about your yellow feeder featured on the Peckish wrapper and you said you would send me one, ....instead....you sent me a cheap looking bullet shape feeder nothing like the yellow one and the balls too were smashed as it wasnt wrapped sufficiently. I have requested to return and you replace it with the yellow one but you dont reply. The birds don't go near the clear one as it scares them and they can't grip it. Please show you care and send us the yellow one. I buy the balls regularly so I am a valued customer.
Thank you for your fast reply I received today. Just to confirm it wasn't clarified by Danial that it would be different to the yellow one featured otherwise I would have said no to the bullet one which is now £1.99 in B&M because nobody wants it. It looks unsightly in the tree and no birds go to it, I think its maybe hard for them to clutch on to it. I had been looking for the yellow one on the packet. I wasn't sure whether it was filled or not.
Thank you for your kind offer of the giftcard and trying to help me get the one featured on the wrapper. It arrived this morning. It really makes a difference to us customers when customers really care like yourselves THANK YOU again.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am very sorry to hear of your disappointment.

We did apologise for the condition in which you received the Peckish Energy Balls from the retailer and explained that, due to the timing and the way our products are sold, returning to the retailer for an exchange or refund would be the best course of action.

As a gesture of goodwill, we arranged to send you one of our Ready to Use Pre-Filled Energy Ball Feeders. Before this was sent, we did confirm in our correspondence which feeder would be provided.

I am very sorry that the goodwill feeder arrived in less than perfect condition and for any inconvenience this caused. However, as we do not sell directly to members of the public, we are unable to arrange for an alternative feeder to be sent out. To ensure you are not left out of pocket, I have arranged for an HTA Garden Gift Card to be sent to you to cover the cost of your original purchase of energy balls.

We truly value your custom and your continued support of the Peckish brand.

Thanks,
The Peckish Team

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.

Our Resolva Lawn Weedkiller is fully regulated (MAPP registered) and designed to target broadleaf weeds without harming grass when used as directed.

Overapplication can sometimes cause grass scorching, and weeds can take time to die as the active ingredients work down to the roots.

If you’d like us to look into this further, please contact us with the product details, photos of your lawn, and how and when it was applied, we’ll be happy to advise.

I brought Westland Moss Master…

I brought Westland Moss Master 400sqmtr. I also brought their recommended spreader. But, having followed the instructions fully, the moss lapped it up and grew greener whilst the grass wilted and died. I reverted back to my previously used moss killer which did the trick and killed the moss. But my lawn has been left with huge dead spots - it looks awful! It is going to have to be reseeded. Wont be using it again!

Hello,

Thank you for your review.

Westland Moss Master is a natural moss treatment, it doesn’t kill moss in the traditional sense but instead breaks it down, returning it to the soil as nutrients that support the grass. Because of this, results can sometimes appear differently to what you’d expect from a chemical moss killer. The product also has two recommended application rates depending on whether you want a gentle feed or are treating a heavier moss infestation.

We’d be happy to look into your experience in more detail and discuss how the product was applied. However, as a different moss killer has since been used, it would make it difficult for us to assess the original results with photos.

When applied at the correct rate and in the right conditions, Moss Master can be used safely without damaging the lawn. If you’d like, please get in touch with our customer service team so we can support you further.

I searched for 'John Innes' compost. I bought this J I from westland. Before I go on,let me explain what John Innes is... It is a 'formula' not a brand or logo. It was developed in the 1930's. and is mafe up of Loam, peat (not peat substitute ) lime, grit and sand ,and fertilizers.
This bag , when I opened it looked like the contents of a vacume cleaner bag. and that is NO exageration. It was NOT 'open' and19 certainly did not look like it had any grit or sharp sand in it.
Seems to me that westland think more of so called saving the planet than they do obeying the rules of the John Innes foundation.
I wil never again buy anything with the name "Westland" on it.
If you want proper John Innes soil based compost I would suggest you look elseware.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We’re sorry to hear about your experience with the compost you purchased and appreciate your detailed comments.

You're right that John Innes is a traditional formula developed in the 1930s, and we respect its heritage and the expectations that come with it. At Westland, we aim to balance tradition with innovation and sustainability, which includes reducing peat usage across our range. However, we understand that this shift may not meet the expectations of all gardeners, especially those seeking a more classic formulation.

We’re disappointed to hear that the compost did not meet your expectations in terms of texture and composition. This is not the standard we aim to deliver. However, we are currently unable to confirm which specific product you purchased. Westland offers a John Innes range of composts, as well as a multi-purpose compost with added John Innes, each designed for different gardening needs.

To investigate this properly, we kindly ask that you provide the full product name and the QA code printed on the bag. This will allow our Quality Assurance team to look into the batch and assess whether it meets our specifications.

customerservice@westland.com is the easiest way to contact us, especially if you're happy to share images of the compost purchased.

We look forward to hearing from you and looking into your concerns.

Mushrooms...

It's very interesting reading these reviews of the Westland multipurpose compost. It has been my go to compost for well over 10 years.

However, this year it is awful. Dries out very quickly and the mushrooms/toadstools everywhere!

I emailed Westland to complain and I was sent a response making me think it was just me - obviously not seeing the many similar complaints.

They did send me a gift voucher which was appreciated but I won't be buying Westland again - such a shame as their compost used to be first rate.

Hello,

Thank you for your review and for being a loyal customer of Westland compost over the years. We’re genuinely sorry to hear that your recent experience with our multi-purpose compost has not met expectations.

We appreciate you reaching out to us directly at the time, and we’re glad we were able to respond and offer a gesture of goodwill. However, we understand your disappointment and take your concerns seriously.

To clarify, mushrooms and toadstools are a natural part of the composting process. Our composts are made from carefully sourced organic materials and go through rigorous heat treatment during production, which eliminates fungal spores, pathogens, and weed seeds. However, compost is a living product, and fungal spores exist in the atmosphere in their billions. When conditions are right, such as warmth, moisture, and fresh organic matter, these spores can settle and thrive, resulting in visible mushrooms or toadstools. This is not harmful to plants or people and is actually a sign of active, nutrient-rich compost.

We understand this may be unexpected and even frustrating, especially if you’ve never encountered it before. We always aim to provide clear information and support, and we’re sorry this experience has led you to reconsider your choice of compost.

Thank you again for your feedback.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback.
We're sorry to hear you're disappointed.

The speed and effectiveness of Resolva products can vary depending on the specific type used, as each contains different active ingredients designed for different types of weeds and conditions.

It’s also worth noting that applying the product multiple times in quick succession won’t speed up results or improve performance, and in some cases may reduce effectiveness.

We’d really like to understand more about which product you used and the conditions it was applied in. Please contact us directly so we can look into this for you.

Awful compost

Only buy Westland John Innes Peat-free Multi-purpose Compost if you want to grow mushrooms!!

It really is poor quality, tomatoes, peppers, etc., are nowhere near as good as previous years when I used B&Q's cheapest!

There are mushrooms growing in virtually every plant pot in the greenhouse and out on the patio pots. One bag I opened had a mass of fungi 'roots' it looked like a spiders web.

They obviously use spent mushroom compost as part of the mix but I would have expected it to b sterilised first.

Hello,

Thank you for your feedback and I’m really sorry to hear about your experience. We’d love to look into this further for you.

Just to clarify, we don’t use spent mushroom compost in our mixes, and our production process involves high temperatures that destroy fungal spores, pathogens, and weed seeds. However, compost isn’t sterile, fungal spores are naturally present in the environment and can settle in compost once the bag is opened or if stored outside. Mushrooms are not harmful and are actually a sign of rich, active compost.

That said, we completely understand your concerns and would be happy to investigate this further. Please email us at customerservice@westland.com with any images you may have and if possible the QA code from the back of the compost bag.

Hello,

Thank you for your review, and we’re sorry to hear the product didn’t perform as expected.

We’d love to look into this further, but we’ll need a bit more detail, especially the exact name of the product used.

Our range includes both contact and systemic weedkillers, each working in different ways. Contact weedkillers target the visible parts of the weed and can provide short-term results, while systemic weedkillers travel through the plant to kill it from the roots up, offering longer-term control.

Please feel free to email us at customerservice@westland.com with the product name and, if possible, photos of the weeds you’re trying to treat. That way, we can give the most accurate advice.

Premium compost infested with flies and mushrooms

I’m still suffering the consequences of using six bags of their contaminated multi purpose compost three months ago. All my seedlings failed, despite prefect growing conditions. I’m still getting horrible little mushrooms growing in all the indoor and outdoor pots that contain this compost (but not in any of the pots that don’t). And worst of all, every indoor pot that I used this compost on is massively infested with fungus gnats. Again, this only affects the plants I potted up or re-potted in the spring with the compost sold by Westland. God only knows where they dredge up this filthy muck, and it’s an absolute disgrace that they think it’s ok to sell it to customers, and then refuse to accept any responsibility afterwards.
+++++++
Just a note about the reply I received below. Firstly, I complained about this issue direct to them three months ago. They fobbed me off, refused to issue a refund, and essentially blamed me for all the mushrooms in my pots. Multi purpose compost either has multiple purposes, or it doesn’t. If it’s not suitable for indoor pots, then it shouldn’t say multi purpose on the bag. And as I’ve already said, the only issues I’ve got with fly and mushroom infestations is with their compost. None of my other plants are affected in any way. The fly eggs and fungal spores were in these bags of compost when I bought them, meaning they hadn’t been properly processed, heated, or sterilised. They basically took raw untreated muck scraped off the ground and sold it as premium compost.

Hello,

We're really sorry to hear about your experience and the ongoing problems you’ve described. That’s certainly not what we want for our customers.

While our multi-purpose compost can be used indoors, it is primarily designed for outdoor use. Due to the natural organic matter it contains, it can sometimes attract fungus gnats, particularly in warm, indoor environments. For houseplants, we always recommend using a dedicated indoor potting mix, which is specially formulated to help prevent issues like this.

The mushrooms you’ve mentioned are naturally occurring in the air and tend to flourish in freshly laid compost, especially when kept moist. Anything that survives our high-temperature composting process will be saprophytic in nature, meaning it feeds on decaying organic matter rather than living plants. These are harmless to both plants and people. Removing the mushrooms as soon as their fruiting bodies appear is the most effective way to manage them.

We’d also be keen to learn more about the specific issues you experienced. If you could get in touch with our customer service team directly and provide details of the seedlings used, along with any images and the QA code from the bag, we’d really appreciate it. This will allow us to investigate fully and offer tailored support.

Westland Premium Pine Bark Nuggets

Bought 17 x 50 litre bags of Westland Premium Pine Bark Nuggets from a local garden centre. I was looking for a premium product that would not turn into mulch within a couple of years and was attracted by the picture on the bag of the Westland product, I also ran my hand over a bag and could feel what seemed like solid nuggets. It stated on the bag that the product would typically last twice as long as non-premium products.
I noticed when I laid the product that there seemed to be a lot of bark shavings. There also seemed to be a fair amount of white wood which appeared to be splintered pine and bore no relation to nuggets, this detracted from the look af the product when laid. Whilst emptying the bags of product, there was also a fair amount of detritus which was the consistency of coarse soil.
When laid, there were a few areas which needed a little more bark so I purchased another bag. I decided to sort the contents of the bag to determine the actual contents. I used 10 litre buckets for the sorted contents. The results were as follows :-
Bark Nuggets : 30 Litres
Bark Shavings : 10 Litres
White wood : 5 Litres
Detritus : 5 Litres

In my opinion, the white wood has been used to fill out the contents. To be fair, I would expect a little detritus when the contents of the bag have settled. For a so called premium product, I would expect to find a far higher nugget content and would not expect 10 litres of bark shavings. The product did not resemble the depiction on the packaging. Maybe trading standards ought to take a look.

Would not purchase this product again.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We're sorry to hear that our Premium Pine Bark Nuggets didn't meet your expectations.

Bark is a natural product, and due to the way it’s harvested and processed, some variation in size, colour, and content is to be expected. However, we do our best to screen out excess white wood and finer particles to maintain a consistent, high-quality finish.

We take your concerns seriously, particularly given the quantities you purchased and the care you've taken to assess the contents. If there's a significant amount of material that doesn't meet the expected standard, it's important we investigate further with our production team.

To help us do this, please get in touch with our customer service team directly. This allows us to gather more detail and, if necessary, take steps to review and improve the product.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Won't purchase again .

We bought 20 50l bags of Westlands multi purpose grosure, really disappointed with it, not good quality compost, dries out so quickly so constantly checking plants and nothing wether it be veg or flowers seem to grow well in it. We have also noticed that plants seem to grow deformed and develop wrinkly leaves. Healthy plants potted up into this don't thrive. A costly mistake with this compost that we won't be making again.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we're really sorry to hear about your experience with our Gro-Sure Multi-Purpose Compost.

We understand how frustrating it must be to invest in your garden only to be let down by the results, and we’re disappointed to hear that your plants didn’t thrive as expected. Our composts are designed to support healthy growth, so the issues you’ve described, such as rapid drying, poor plant performance, and leaf deformation, are certainly not the outcome we’d expect or want for any of our customers.

We’d like to look into this further, especially as you’ve used such a significant quantity of the product. If you’re willing, please get in touch with our customer service team via email customerservice@westland.com so that we can look into this for you.

Thanks,
The Westland Team

Very poor quality growbags

Bought 10 tomato bags this year and all the plants are weedy and stunted.
Bags from another company were fine.
Will not be using these again.

Hello,

Thank you for your review.
We’re sorry to hear that you haven’t had success with our grass seed.

There are several external factors that can affect germination, including suboptimal temperatures (either too hot or too cold), insufficient watering, or simply not enough time having passed since sowing.

We’d really like to help you get the best results. Please email us at customerservice@westland.com with details from the packet, images of your lawn, and any sowing information you can provide. Our team will be happy to look into this further and offer tailored advice.

Kind regards,
The Westland Customer Service Team

Smart Lawn Seed highly NOT recommended.

I purchased two boxes of Smart Lawn Seed, one this year by mistake and one a couple of years ago. On neither occasion, despite following the instructions on the box and sowing at the correct time of year, have I seen a single blade of new grass. Complaints to the company have been answered with standard rebuttals.

Hello,

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry to hear of your disappointment whilst using our seed.

There are many factors as to why grass seed doesn't germinate or germinates slower than expected. From poor soil contact, seeds sown too deep and even older grass seed.

So that we can look into this and advise, can I please ask that you email us directly with the following information:
- The exact seed purchased
- The date it was sown
- Images of the lawn and close ups of the seeded areas
- The batch code from the back of the box

We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards,
Westland Customer Service Team

Excellent!

Westland have been so amazingly helpful to me. I was sold Westland compost by a local, supposedly reputable company. The seeds came up, but as there was no nutrition in the compost, all my tomatoes and cucumbers etc died. I rang Westland and took a photo of the compost to show them, and they confirmed it was well out of date. The local company refused a refund, accusing me of trying to scam free compost! However, Westland were brilliant and sent me vouchers for more compost, along with tomato and cucumber seeds. So - big thank you to Westland Horticulture! Excellent customer service! (Can't remember date, so put in an estimate)

Have uses this before with no problems

Have uses this before with no problems. This years batch with added John Innes has adversely affected many of my pot plants particulary fuchsias with yellowing and distorted leaves (the ones not potted with westland are fine. Suspect the problems lies with selected weed killers in law clippings. I will not be using this product again.

Hello,

Thank you for your review. We are very sorry to hear that you have had this experience with one of our composts.

Here at Westland, we do not use green waste in any of our composts, which is the usual source of residual herbicide in growing media.

There are a few reasons why your fuchsias could have experienced the of yellowing leaves, from transplant shock, under/over watering or even a lack of nutrients.

If you'd like for us to look into this batch of compost for you, please contact us directly customerservice@westland.com with some images of your plants, as well as the QA code from the back of the bag.

Thanks,

Peat free compost.

Past few years have used Westland Gro sure all purpose compost with no issues. Have recently purchased 3 bags of 50 litres peat free multi purpose with added John Innes. The compost is very coarse, it's smells extremly strongly of Ammonia/ rotting manure. Transplanted chilli seedlings which have effectively curled up and died, also used for French and Runner beans which resulted in only approx 20% germination. Have now emptied bags on a spare area of garden and will spread in borders in winter.
Very disappointed with product.
