The fees equate to theft...
Note: the only people who like upwork, are a crew great clients and those clients that want to pay little to nothing for having work done. I did probably 8 long term jobs with odesk, and then they sold out to upwork. I had not worked with upwork at all, but then got a long-term position at a really decent hourly rate. Normally, this site is 90% clients looking for work for a dollar an hour or a penny per word, which you will only get individuals from third world countries to complete. I didn't realize so many things have changed, so when I got my first check of $600, $120 was taken out for fees. This is not including taxes or anything else. The client is also charged fees. They literally take 20% of your money for the privilege of you having the job. Not to mention, if I was getting amazing customer service and turnover, it would be different. You have to wait an average of 12 to 15 days for each check if you are paid 'weekly'. You don't actually get paid weekly. They say that, but the soonest you can get paid is every 12 to 15 days. Not only that, but if you work at an hourly rate and make under $100, you can not put that money into your account until you get another job and earn enough that your balance is over $100. They will not transfer your money to your account until it is at least $100. I don't even know what they're charging the clients, but this place is a scam artist. They have the worst customer service of any placement agency I've ever encountered and their response to issues is non-existent. Don't even bother if you want to eat every day, because upwork sure doesn't care if you do. I would love to meet the CEO of upwork, because I already know how well that person lives. I also know they would never work for $3 an hour. But it's not actually $3 an hour! Through upwork standards, you would only be making $2.60.
