Terrible experience - upgraded and charged without my knowledge

I picked up the rented car and was upgraded without my permission. I questioned why the holding deposit was £607 was was told by the agent that it was due to the type of car. He never said anything about an upgrade. I returned the car then realised only part of the deposit was returned. I looked at the receipt and realised part of this payment was an upgrade. I called and made a complain but was told I had signed on the dotted line. Really sneaky and I think this was deceitful. I am making a complain to the ombudsman.
I do not recommend hiring a car with this company.
