Since your ticket is tied to your passport, paper tickets are not strictly necessary, but it is useful and reassuring to have printed proof of one's train, car, and seat number (in a more official format than just an itinerary from a third-party reseller) in the event of any problems. This service is a lifesaver for foreigners or anyone who wants to reserve train tickets in China during busy travel periods and doesn't want to have to hover over their keyboard or phone (along with millions of other users at the same time) ready to pounce on seats the instant they become available 15 days before one's travel date. I was happy to outsource this task to agents far more fluent in Chinese than I am, and more knowledgeable about the ins and outs of mainland China's complex rail network.
