Unintuitive design that makes learning English less fun

As someone who’s been forced to use this site for a few years, I can say it’s not very good, and as a linguistics nerd, it’s such a shame as Bedrock Learning makes learning English seem not cool.
First off, the way new words are introduced is really bad because they’re always explained in long-winded, hard to explain ways. And, when you click on a definition of a word (which you must do 3-4 times to progress), you have to sit through the entire recording of the narrator reading out the definition.
Second, the questions aren’t any better either as they almost always multiple choice, and follow the same structures of “find the synonym/antonym of [word]?”, “what image matches [word]?”, so after a few lessons they become really easy and lose educational value since they can be completed in 1-3 minutes without thinking.
The grammar section isn’t any better; it forces you to watch 5-10 minute videos explaining the topic, and of course it’s as slow as possible. And the questions are even worse; you have to write out quite long sentences out of some fragments given, but the fragments can’t be copy and pasted, so you have to manually copy it, and even when I matched the fragments character by character, it still said I got it wrong, and because you need a certain percent right to continue, I’ve reached a point where I can’t progress any further because of this exact problem.

Do NOT choose bedrock for your class, teachers

POOR WEBSITE

Been using this for 4 years for school and honestly I genuinely can’t anymore, I’m not sure what bedrock does but it certainly doesn’t teach children anything, the amount of rage you can feel doing bedrock is the amount of rage you would feel if a teacher started shouting at you and calling you a liar, child abuse don’t use it

parent of 3 children

this website is tortue this will be my nightmare this will become a bigger issue as more kids start being forced to use this before you know it they will spam 1 star review this website and it will be taken down this is insanity the website is glitchy and the work is extremely unsanppy it feels like a bunch of childrect completed in a few minute and ill just summurize the leat of your worries when using this app :

Unbelievably patronising and activities and extracts have made direct positive references towards hateful figures, which was the final straw with my tolerance for this site.
At my school, bedrock was initially trailed with that year's Y11 top sets and no one gave positive feedback but their trail ran out so we're stuck with it until god knows when.
Just to add to the mentioned of the hate figure (since more information was requested) the first instance, and the worst, is during an activity within B9 T13 Women Writers (I can't remember which lesson but it is in reference to learning the word alias) there is a mock text message which says "Did you know that the author Robert Galbraith isn't a real person? It's an alias!" (direct quote). For those who may not be aware Robert Galbraith is the pseudonym used by hate figure Joanne Rowling and the only thing this can possibly be referencing. It is also important to note that Robert Galbraith isn't a name Rowling made up and chose, but is also the name of conversation therapist Robert Galbraith Heath, who did many abusive things such as illegal drug trials with black prisoners, and most prominently for my complaint, mounted electrodes to an man's skull in an attempt to turn him straight, which is reflective towards Rowling's views and opinions on certain members of the LGBTQ+ community today. It's also important to note that many books that Rowling has published under the Galbraith name have contained extremely hurtful and transphobic stereotypes.
The second instance again references to Joanne Rowling within the same block and book, this time lesson 79. It is within the extract itself and makes reference to her more commonly known alias, J.K Rowling. I understand that it is within the spirit and the tone of the book to mention her among many other successful female writers and it may have been written before Rowling really started to spread her transphobic rhetoric. However, we should not be giving this woman a platform at all. The inclusion of her name within the text is completely out of touch, especially considering the money she gets from the series she's written under the name J.K Rowling has been used to fund hate groups and destroy the lives of many trans and trans+ people throughout the UK and beyond. I understand that Harry Potter is a culturally significant series but that success is now overshadowed by Joanne's social media presence. A bit of an extreme sample but it's like saying Hitler was a great artist and not acknowledge the mass slaughter of political opposers, Jewish communities, disabled people and many other minority groups that he orchestrated. All in all, I believe that we shouldn't give Joanne Rowling a platform and when we do we should make reference to the genuinely horrible things she's done.
I expect better from an award winning site such as Bedrock to not include hate figures in such a positive light.

I'd give it zero stars if I could, it's that bad.

My expirience with bedrock has been very poor, I'd give it zero stars if i could. This website is completely unhelpful and it is so boring that I nearly fell asleep one time. The videos are useless and when you put in your answer it takes ages to explain why your wrong or right and you can't skip the explanation which is really annoying. When I go on this I'll be on it for like an hour and it will only say 20 minutes. Also I have learnt absolutely nothing from this app. The blocks are extremely unacturate, considering I'm in year six with good grammar and spelling scores on Sat's and all its doing is asking me what a noun is and verbs and adjectives and that sort of thing. And it's like I want to yell at my computer: I ALREADY KNOW WHAT THIS IS! In conclusion, this website is not good for learning and it is sooooooooooo boring. So if a teacher is reading this I advise you not to give your students this as schoolwork or homework. Also, why is it named after a Minecraft block? Is bedrock trying to trick us into thinking that their website is like Minecraft, because if so, IT IS NOTHING LIKE MINECRAFT!

Impressive Progress with Bedrock

The recent improvements have really made a difference in user experience. As a parent, I can see my child fully engaged with the content and the teachers also seem very happy with their progress. There are lots of additional functions to enhance learning and the vocabulary examples are very well structured. The results speak for themselves so thank you Bedrock.

It is so boring, and so useless

It is so boring, you have to wait so long for them to read out the terrible examples, it doesn't make sense, and it is just not helpful. You could spend hours writing and doing everything it says and it would say you have only done like 20 minutes! I hate it so much. There is no point in doing it, you learn absolutely nothing. It is so annoying and I can't put into words how boring, useless, and unhelpful it is. WHY DOES IT TAKE SO LONG TO SAY A SHORT SENTENCE?? it doesn't let you skip, even if you either know what it is, or you have already read it.

Hi there – thanks for taking the time to leave a review, and I’m really sorry to hear that you're having such a frustrating experience with the platform.

You're not alone in finding the pace of the audio slow – this is something we've heard from a few learners, and it's something we're actively working on improving. It’s a delicate balance between clarity for comprehension and making the experience feel fluid and engaging, but we know we need to do better here.

We really do want every learner to get something valuable out of the platform, so it’s disappointing to hear it’s not landing for you. Your feedback is genuinely appreciated and helps us know where to focus our efforts.

Thanks again – Ben

The timing is never accurate and more.

The timing is never accurate. I did roughly half an hour an it said I had done 13 minuates. It is alos very very specific on what answers to allow and even if you're right, it still says you are wrong.

Hi there - thank you for your review, and I’m sorry to hear you’ve had a frustrating time with the platform.

On the timing issue, that definitely doesn’t sound right. If you’ve done around 30 minutes and it’s only recorded 13, something might be going wrong in the background. If you’re happy to, please do reach out to our support team at support@bedrocklearning.org and they’ll be able to look into it for you.

As for answers being marked incorrect when they’re actually right - again, that’s not something we’d expect to see and we’d really like to fix it if there’s an issue. It's not something we do see often, so if you can share an example or two, we’ll review and update it straight away.

Thanks again for raising these points - your feedback helps us keep improving the experience for everyone.

If I could give zero stars I would

If I could give zero stars I would. Why do schools force our kids to use this nonsense? The website is often glitchy and you end up having to watch the super slow and patronising videos more than once (with no option to speed up the sound to have them speak at a normal human pace). Often instructions are unclear and you end up having to repeat whole sections. No learning happening, just trying to tick the box so you don't get told off at school for not having done your homework. Useless tool used by lazy teachers.

Hi there - thanks for sharing your thoughts, and I’m really sorry to hear that your experience with the platform has been so negative.

We completely understand how frustrating it can be when technical issues or unclear instructions get in the way of learning. That’s not the experience we want learners or parents to have, and we’re actively working on improving both the clarity of the tasks and the stability of the platform. If you're experiencing repeated glitches, it would be really helpful to hear more via support@bedrocklearning.org so we can investigate and fix what’s going wrong.

On the speed of the audio - you’re right, this has come up from a few learners and parents, and we’re currently reviewing how we can make the experience more adaptable, especially for those who feel the pace is too slow or the tone too simplified.

Bedrock is designed to be embedded into homework or the classroom, supporting teachers with their teaching. Good usage has a proven impact on attainment. We want to ensure that every student is getting these benefits, so thanks for your feedback and we do encourage you to keep persevering. Thanks - Ben

Hi there – I’m sorry to hear you feel this way.

It’s clear that you’ve had a frustrating experience with the platform, and that’s not what we want for any of our learners.

If there’s anything specific that’s caused this reaction – whether it’s a technical issue, the way the content is delivered, or something else entirely - we’d really appreciate it if you could let us know at support@bedrocklearning.org. We’re always looking for ways to improve, and honest feedback like this helps guide those changes.

I'm sorry if anyone has to do it. This piece of garbage is hell like and I would give a criminal to do this. Yes its that torturous. Whoever invented this, I will try to find you.

Hi there – I can see you’ve had a really strong reaction to the platform and, whilst I really encourage you to think about your choice of language online, I’m genuinely sorry it’s left you feeling this way.

I do want to share that Bedrock has been shown to make a real difference for many learners - improving vocabulary, comprehension, and ultimately building confidence in reading and writing. We work closely with schools and teachers, and there’s strong evidence that the structured, consistent approach really does support academic progress.

That said, we know it’s not perfect, and we’re constantly working to improve both the content and the learner experience. If you’ve been placed in the wrong block, found errors or have ideas to improve user experience, please do let us know via support@bedrocklearning.org – we can look into it and make adjustments where needed.

Hi there – thanks for your review, and I’m sorry to hear that you’re not enjoying your experience with Bedrock.

Just to explain the name – Bedrock is all about building strong foundations in literacy. It’s meant to reflect the essential skills we help learners develop, like vocabulary and comprehension, which support learning across every subject.

That said, it’s clear the platform hasn’t clicked for you, and I’m sorry to hear it doesn’t feel like it’s helping. If you’ve got specific issues or feedback you’d be happy to share, we’d love to hear it at support@bedrocklearning.org – it helps us keep improving for all learners. Thanks - Ben

What. Is. This. Stupid. Trash.

Just delete it. I despise it. This is an OUTRAGE that that stupid, stupid nuisance website exists. The useless videos take too long. Wish I can skip that idiot video.
The questions are too annoying. I would rather die than do this garbage. There is nothing saving this useless nuisance from hate zone. And if you don't get enough questions right, they force you to retry - WTF!?

Please delete this trash and send it into obscurity.
This nerd website is awful. Do not use it, it will make. Your. Life. Harder.

Thanks for being so honest with your feedback – it’s clear that your experience with Bedrock has been incredibly frustrating, and I’m genuinely sorry it’s felt that way.

The videos can feel slow, especially if you're already familiar with the content, and not being able to skip or speed them up has been a common piece of feedback. We're actively looking into how we can make the experience more flexible without compromising learning.

As for having to retry if you don’t get enough questions right – that’s designed to help reinforce understanding, which is helpful for making progress.

We really don’t want Bedrock to feel like a burden. While many learners do see real progress through the programme, your feedback is just as important and helps us continue improving. Thanks - Ben

Everything about the website is terrible!

Everything about the website is terrible, The narrator talks for so long and you can't skip it, The block I have been assigned is way too easy teaching basic words, meaning the initial test is inaccurate, and even if I anted to get to a higher block I can only do 2 lessons per day, out of the 96 lessons needed to complete the block. There are picture rounds which don't even make sense, as the answers are subjective and there are pictures that are wrong but also could be correct. Would give it 0 stars if I could. Why can't I skip the Narrator??? He is so slow??? I have learned nothing and there is nothing positive for me to talk about

I appreciate you sharing your honest thoughts, and I’m sorry to hear that the platform hasn’t met your expectations.

We’re aware that the pace of the narrator can feel slow, and the inability to skip audio is something we’re actively exploring to improve so learners like you can have a smoother experience.

Regarding the placement and pacing, our initial assessments aim to place learners where they can build a solid foundation, but we understand that sometimes it might feel too easy. That being said, if you can be moved up blocks based on performance so this should correct itself naturally.

The limit on lessons per day/week is designed to encourage consistent learning without overwhelming. Simply, students retain more information by doing little and often!

As for the picture rounds, we appreciate the feedback about ambiguity and will investigate to ensure the questions are clear and fair. If there are any specific, please do email us - support@bedrocklearning.org.

While it’s disappointing to hear you haven’t found value in the platform yet, your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps us make Bedrock better for all learners.

Bedrock Performance

My school uses Bedrock as English homework and while the higher blocks are educational, there is nothing to do when you've finished Block 12. It just moves you down to blocks you haven't completed and you learn nothing. It gets a few glitches and can be quite annoying. In conclusion, Bedrock can be good, it just isn't very good for students who do a lot of it

Hi Lottie - thanks for your review. Glad you're seeing the benefits for students who are using Bedrock. On your point on finishing Block 12, I recommend heading to the Bedrock Library. You'll find more texts there and complex vocabulary suitable for those at Block 12 level. Students can work through them at their own pace. Hope that helps!
