I just left Roku as they hardware fails…
I just left Roku as they hardware fails and their customer service was a joke.
There is something they did with a software update, or perhaps the remote just fails after a while- but it started eating batteries and randomly disconnecting after about 8 months of use.
It became infuriating, as I couldn't control the device at all. I tried everything, being a developer myself I understood that things sometimes go wrong and a re-set up it sometimes needed. However, nothing would work. Completely reset the devices to factory settings using the phone app (the only way to interact with the device once the remote goes) - I reset the remote and gave t new batteries, and for a few minutes, everything worked as you would expect. But then, after a few minutes, the remote wouldn't talk to the Roku device at all. Sometimes exchanging out the batteries would let it reconnect, but then it would burn though the batteries in less than 2 weeks- but I ended up in this cycle of it sometime working and never knowing if it would continue working or not.
I reached out to the customer service, they gave me some advice about doing all the things I have tried, but also doing a procedure where you push the button, resync and update the remote firmware- but it never worked.
Eventually they said they would replace the device, but I had to pay to send it in to their warehouse, and then they would send me out a new one.
I mean, within a year, I would have expected them to arrange delivery of a new working device and collect the old broken one, but no- you have to send and pay for it.
When they eventually delivered it, you have to be in to sign for it, if you are not, which was my case, they leave it with a neighbour and don't tell you. The neighbour didn't sign for it, and then I had the delivery guy chasing me for a signature a week later, which I had to be in for, so he didn't loose his job or something.
I'm also a developer and work for a TV station that creates new daily content. I build a Roku app, but it took ages for it to work, and their API is unbearably and unnecessarily complicated to use, and updated so infrequently, I gave up.
The company showed so much promise- but they put so little respect into treating their customers and developers well, I would never recommend their devices or services to anyone.
They could have been a great company, such a shame.
