A nice idea with a fundamental flaw

Having dealers bid for your car is great. The problem is that the bids are non-binding, as the small print allows for them to adjust their bid if the listing is not deemed accurate. And the truth is that a professional appraiser is always going to find more issues with a second-hand car than even the most diligent civilian would, allowing the dealers all the justification they wish for to drop their bid *on the day of collection* - in our case, by £1250+, due to what they claimed was "extensive undeclared damage". This was flat-out nonsense, and the behaviour of bad actors, but in no way against the terms of Motorway's service.

For this to work, you need to change the process: perform the appraisal with a trusted 3rd party *before* the auction, then make the bids binding. That will prevent shifty dealers overbidding for vehicles, safe in the knowledge they can drop their actual price on the day when sale and collection are arranged and otherwise agreed, and demand the seller take it or leave it. In our case, we left it, but we know others have not and have lost out as a result.

I have no trust in the process, or the behaviour of some dealers, as things stand.

I'd have an easier time accepting this reply if we hadn't highlighted exactly those areas that needed attention (the scratch with primer exposed was front and centre in the listing, as you'd expect) and if I hadn't previously received a quote for £400 to make good the damage *that was already included in the listing*. The vehicle is 9 years old, as described in the profile, and was photographed and outlined as requested. The behaviour of the dealer was both well below expectations, and from what I'm hearing elsewhere, exactly as expected.

Thanks for your review. Sorry that you were unhappy the buyer requested a price reduction on collection. Unfortunately the vehicle was not as described on your profile. We have been sent a condition report from collection with photos of the vehicle, and although we had just 5 areas of damage highlighted on the profile, there were an additional 20 issues identified by the collections firm.

Based on the photos, these are issues the untrained observer would be able to identify, including multiple scratches, some of which were much deeper than those you did provide photos of and exposed white primer on a black car. The drivers conclusion was that almost every panel on the car would require paint to repair the scratches, rather than other less expensive methods of repair.

Unfortunately your price is guaranteed on the basis of the photos and details provided, and we do clearly outline if the vehicle is not as described, the buyer is within their rights to request a reduction or walk away. You're never obligated to accept a lower offer of course, and I understand in this case you chose not to.

The agent who collected your car was an independent collections agent hired and booked by Motorway directly to collect the car on behalf of the buyer, with no relationship with the buyer whatsoever. Their fee is unaffected by the amount you receive for the car, and so they have no financial interest in reducing their offer.

Everything fine, despite courier issues

Goods were despatched faster than I expected, and arrived in perfect working order. The only hiccup was CityLink who were experiencing seasonal backlog problems and failed to deliver for two days running. Still, it's that time of year and nothing the supplier could do (other than use a different courier, I suppose).
