Direct Line has been insuring cars for 40 years. From small beginnings, we’re now one of the UK’s biggest insurers, with more than 10 million customers. We offer a range of products, including home, pet, and business insurance, that you can get online, on our app, or over the phone. For many years, we prided ourselves on only dealing directly with customers, but as insurance has evolved, so have we, and you can now buy some of our policies on Price Comparison Websites. We always put our customers first, that’s why we make it easy to manage your insurance online so you can spend more time on the things that matter.

The numbers on the policy documents are not correct - spent 40 mins trying to get through to the correct department. Total shambles - no one takes ownership of the issue, just says, not something I deal with and put the phone down.

DIRECT LINE HOME INSURANCE REF 500531025
On 30th August we reported to Direct Line the same day In an upstairs We had an overflowing bath and a large volume of water overflowed out of the bath due to taps being left on with the plug in in error For a number of hours A large volume of water went across the tiled floor then under the bath panel through the kitchen ceiling below damaging the bathroom tiled floor and the downstairs kitchen ceiling below the upstairs bathroom
20 days later on 19th Sept Davies Loss Adjusters sub contracted the survey work to a third party called Claims validation Services When the CVS surveyor attended he said drying machines were required to dry the kitchen base floor as his damp meter showed high humidity levels under the kitchen units due to the water coming through the kitchen ceiling ect.
When I phoned Davies on 22nd Sept to see when the drying machines were coming they said the CVS surveyor had advised to repudiate the claim as he thought the grouting between the tiles in the upstairs bath room was loose and ineffective and should have stopped water going through the bathroom floor then through the downstairs kitchen ceiling below
I explained to Davies that I disputed the ineffective grout theory from CVS on the grounds that it would have made no difference if the grout was the best or worst in the world as water runs to its lowest point and therefore an escape of water in volume would run across the tiled floor and then under the bath panel and bath and through the kitchen ceiling below in any case, and therefore it’s an insured peril and there is no such thing as a tiled water proof floor in a domestic bathroom ect
They advised me to take it up with Direct Line which I did on 23rd Sept I phoned Direct Line Home Insurance Claims Team and I was told someone would review the case and call me back the next day Nobody called me back so I phoned Direct Line again the next day on 24th Sept and was told the same thing again I have phoned Direct Line Claims Team every day since the 23rd Sept for 23 consecutive days up to 16th Oct excluding weekends and been told every day someone would call me and nobody has I’ve had to phone them 23 days in a row and was told yesterday on 15th Oct By Lorna in the claims team she would call Monday 19th Sept I explained to Lorna my wife is extremely ill and I’ve had to retire from work to look after her and I her husband had authority from Direct Line to deal with the claim on her behalf as her names on the policy Lorna insisted she wanted to speak to my wife even though I explained she is on a very high dosage of morphene and is drowsy So I had to hold the phone to my wife’s ear as she’s bed bound and had to go through the entire claim again while Lorna adopted a mildly disbelieving line of questioning
The whole experience falls way short of how an insurer should conduct itself in dealing with a policy holder Infact its an utter disgrace how we have been treated by Direct Line We’ve had this policy for 25 years since 2005 We stuck with Direct Line because we were under the impression they were one of the Uks leading insurers How wrong we were I would not want to ever go through this again Having all this totally uncalled for stress in what should have been a simple procedure I’ve been passed from one person to another for 23 days in a row and it’s still not sorted out now

The water leak problem which affected our bedroom was obviously a worrying experience for us.My call to D L brought an immediate response. The leak was repaired by our local builder and thereafter DL contractor took over. The dehumidifier stayed a little too long but then The contractor sent Scott (plumber)to carry out restoration work-and how good he was nothing was too much trouble- excellent.
Next Phil the painter came and again did a great job.We had to provide our own new carpet with fitters and we reimbursed the cost without any difficulty.
We are most grateful for the service provided and should we have another problem we know who to
call !!!

Total waste of a day trying to change a number plate on a policy something that should have taken a few minutes took hours and a missed appointment through not being able to drive car

Awful experience with direct line and untruths from their loss adjusters. I wouldn't recommend making a subsidence claim - they just tell lies throughout and won't pay out.
Just to add - I've logged a complaint but unsurprisingly this wasn't upheld and I haven't been given the final response to go to FOS.

Slightly more expensive policy than other companies but when it came to a claim I had to make they handled it very swiftly and sorted everything super fast. I was very impressed with their service and glad I went with them! Worth the extra policy money for sure!
