Had a fantastic learning experience w/…

Had a fantastic learning experience w/ Soundfly via DRAFT // ECHO. At the advice of a friend I joined a cohort of musicians working to stretch the limits of their creativity. Though I'm earlier in my journey than others in the group and was humbled by the amount of experience, I found the group to be inclusive, warm, and the entire experience to be massively educational. Ian expertly gave a series of inspirational presentations and facilitated amongst us -- fantastic communicator and the depth of his understanding of others' approach and process was tremendous. Even with my early experience, I took away some insights which both helped me to move forward on progress I wouldn't have made otherwise as well as some lessons that I expect to continue to pay dividends down the road. Would absolutely recommend (worth the time and money) and am looking forward to learning from the folks at Soundfly.

Soundfly provides substantive value in a troubled niche

Let's cut to the chase: there's a massive cottage industry out there that's taken the phrase "in a gold rush, sell shovels" as their motto, and is doing some mix of courting or preying on aspiring musicians, many of whom are still little kids at heart, but now have adult money to spend on their dreams.

Soundfly operates in this niche with integrity, providing real lasting value and some of the best educational content for musicians who work through its classes. While the classes ease you in incrementally and effectively, they don't skimp on challenging material, and they give you project prompts to make sure you consolidate and apply what you're learning as you go. Soundfly has all the fundamental theory and production material you'd get in an undergrad or master's degree in its catalog, at a fraction of the cost. I'm often surprised to find how much insight they pack into the classes included in their subscription, given that many non-Soundfly influencers monetizing via courses charge $500-1k+ per class equivalent for a fraction of that value.

Soundfly differentiates itself further on two fronts. (1) With the custom content provided by successful artists. They provide courses from a roster of artists that includes Com Truise, Ryan Lott, Kimbra, Elijah Fox, and many others. These are real in-depth courses, not the workflow highlights and aphorisms you get from platforms like Masterclass. And (2) with the periodic live workshops they offer, which benefit both from the skill of the instructors guiding the workshops (who are sometimes these artists, and sometimes skilled facilitators) and the quality of students Soundfly attracts to participate in said workshops. I've joined two of these now as a composer/producer, and in both cases improved as a composer, came out with new friends, and wrote enough raw material to plant the seeds for several albums.

While it's true that Soundfly occasionally does time-limited offers, etc., dipping into tapping FOMO now and then to drive sales or enrollment, they do it sparingly in contrast with how the industry operates as a whole, and IMO do the amount that they've done just so they can survive as a business. I have always found any sales contact or interaction from them to have a true win/win focus, rather than the aggressive sell-at-any-cost tactics you find elsewhere. And I have never had one scammy interaction with them; on the contrary, I've seen them consistently decline to offer services or courses when they don't feel they can deliver the quality they strive for.

Anytime a friend of mine asks for recommendations on how to improve their musicianship or take their production to the next level, I always point them as Soundfly as a first stop. Because I know real value is on offer, and I know I can trust Soundfly not to take advantage of them. In the world of music education platforms, that's an increasingly rare set of guarantees.

New perspectives to song writing and production

I did a 4 week mentorship with Ian Prince. I brought a few song drafts to our intro session and we narrowed down to one track to focus on for the duration of the mentorship. What an absolute joy it was having him as a teacher. He provided such wisdom, insight, and actionable feedback, and opened my ears and mind to new ways of approaching structure, writing, production, and sonic depth. He guided me through the tools with a very hands-on approach, demoing/screensharing stuff live, and even helped me with specific elements by singing or improving instrumentation examples over my existing tracks. The specificity and concrete demos really helped me understand what he was talking about, in addition to his clear communication even about more abstract elements and concepts. He was so approachable and incredibly generous with his time, and I truly felt inspired throughout the process.

Incredible 6 weeks mentorship with Lavender Looi

I had a 6 week mentorship with Lavender Looi. She was absolutely incredible. She is very experienced and professional. She has a vision and a strong sense in music production. Listening to her thought process alone was very helpful. We worked on a new song and fixing an old song that i did previously. She was really nice and she answered all my questions during our calls or per email. Her focus was to help me and answer all my questions even if we exceeded the 45 mins call time.
Every week we had a call. During the call, she gave me feedback on what i did the previous week in my songs and answered all my questions and the obstacles i faced and shows me how to do things or sent me absolutely helpful videos. At the end of each call she gave me a homework to work on some parts of the 2 songs.
I learned a lot about music production from her. Before this program i was lost and was orienting myself to the youtube videos but she gave me a sense of direction and validated what i was doing right and gave me feedback how to improve other things. She gave me a lot of tips and helped understand the reason for many decisions i take during the music production process.
I am absolutely grateful for this experience.
Maybe as a hint, a weekly call can a bit stressful for someone who works on the side, but it is doable and i also used the 2 break weeks to do more progress in my songs.

My mentoring experience with Joseph was delightful and incredibly helpful. He helped me create a social media marketing strategy to launch my new electronic music project and was supportive during our whole month of working together. I would definitely recommend working with a Soundlfy mentor if you want to take your music journey seriously.

YESSSSS

This is like Masterclass but if masterclass did courses I actually was interested in. When I saw Ryan Lott of Son Lux did a course on creating sample based instruments, I had to sign up. It honestly was a game changer for me. I’d always been such a timid user of Kontakt, really not knowing how to do things like create my own patches using my own samples. Now I understand that this is the key to developing sounds that are unique to you. Honestly, it was worth it for this course alone, but then I got into the RJD2 sampling course and that was also great. I can’t even remember how I found this website but I’m so happy I did!

The content is really great

The content is really great. I feel like my musical skills have been elevated and this is a great option for a high quality content low cost way of learning. The courses challenge you to think outside of just watching videos and they teach you how to get out of online learning. My mentor is super fun, inspired me to try out a new process of songwriting that works best for me, and is very knowledgeable about production. Overall, it's a worthwhile experience!

I did the 6 week mentorship program and it worked awesome for me.
I mainly used for feedback on my own tracks and it helped me drastically.
My mentor had really constructive criticism throughout the whole program and he helped get my songs to the level I was looking for.
And I love how personnalized the whole thing was.
I came in with a set of goals in mind and that's exactly what we did.

Take the leap of faith!

The classes I have taken so far which are the Com Truise synthwave course and Intro into Hip Hop production have really helped release the cobwebs strewn across my creative muscles. The challenges in the lessons are a mix of both challenging and inspiring in that they often encourage the learner to try a process they haven’t tried before or, try a creative technique that seemed daunting prior to entering in the class. The hands on application of the concepts learned are great for people who are hands on learners as well!

The music mentorship program however takes the experience to new heights and I really mean that truthfully. I saw reviews saying this was a tailor fit experience and I was like hmmm I don’t believe it. Well, I was so happy I took that leap of faith and signed up for the course!! My mentor listened to my mixes and helped me identify the issues and guided me on finding the answers myself so that I can be and feel confident in the choices I make when mixing. She also provided me with tools and exercises I can do that will help sharpen my skills.

Whatever skill level you are at, Soundfly has something for you. If you are afraid, trust me I was too but this was honestly so worth it.

Amplify your time and effort with Soundfly

Improving anything in ones life is often a function of time and effort.

We who wish to learn hope to find avenues that amplify the fruits of our time and efforts.

I am a big proponent of the value of mentorship. I owe every skill I possess to an army of people greater than me willing to pass on some wisdom and lessons learned so I didn't have to overcome every challenge they did to accomplish my own goals.

I made a decision about a month ago that I was going to take a serious stab at improving my audio capabilities, but the sacrifice of time and effort away from my job and family meant that it had to be potent; it had to be worth it.

For a decade I had only dabbled in music. Memorized a song or two that I could play on the keyboard. Poked at the keys, trying to find something that "sounded good", as I had dreams of composing music for my own videogames. A part of me thought that this was the way, a part of me thought "I'm creative, if I just keep poking, I'll figure it out, and my dreams will unfold into reality.".

This was not an amplifier of my time and effort. This was not potent. This was not the way.

I discovered Soundfly specifically searching for mentorship programs. I joined, and spent a month with a mentor.

What I can tell you is within that month I went from someone who "poked around", who didn't know a molecule of music theory, who dreamed of the day I could make something that sounded "good", to someone who not only knows scales, and chords, and modes, and progressions, but how they relate to one another, how music is context, that the same note that brought you tension can bring you relief if you know where to put it.

I now see this I II- III- IV V VI- VII°, and know not only that it's a major scale, but that it's THE major scale, and by that extent EVERY major scale.

But who cares about all that really, what really matters is I learned how to apply all that stuff. I learned how to turn all that nonsense into music. I, for the first time in my life, am able to think of things musically, and how to express a creative musical thought into an actual piece of music that I can bring outside of my own head and into this world, something I can share, or even just enjoy myself.

Would this have been possible without Soundfly? No. Maybe for you, but not for me. I needed the time and attention from the clearly very talented, knowledgeable, expert Joseph, who was authentically invested in my success.

He not only gave me insights into great works that I admired, critiqued everything I produced, but also guided my every step, so that I didn't get mired down in things that wouldn't be potent. He amplified my time and effort, and that's why it was all well worth it.

Anyway, thank you Soundfly team for pairing me with Joseph, and providing this service for people like me. People who have dreams, but who's dreams have a cost. For giving me the skills to take the music inside of me, and put it out into the world so I can truly hear it for the first time.

Little pricey but worth it.

Good team. Kinda pricey for the mentorship aspect imo but gave me what I was looking for. I liked some of the courses too. Be prepared to go into each meeting with an agenda of what to talk about to get as much out of each session as possible.
