The whole process is generally clear and easy to follow, and if one does have questions the support team are great at helping.
Completed and submitted my tax returns, as expected, and certainly seem to understand the complexities of expat taxes.
However, it was not clear until I had entered every single detail and was ready to submit, that they required me to use the premium service due to my dual citizenship. I have no need of most of the other services/upgrades covered in the premium package, so it seemed very over-priced. With the incremental cost of submitting multiple FBAR disclosures, the bill ended up more than five times the price I was expecting. Maybe just my unique circumstances but this REALLY feels like "Bait and switch!" I will be carefully reading the small print and shopping for a different tax service next year.
EDIT: i received a personal message about my review, explaining why Premium service was required in my case. I'm impressed with that focus on customer service and changed my rating from 3* to 4*. I still feel the price bump was excessive for my particular circumstances.

The process was smooth and I could ask questions if there were any doubts. Its was a huge stress trying to navigate the mountains of forms but with expat taxes I got peace of mind

My main issue was with my state return. State returns are not automatically generated by the software and must be prepared by a human within MyExpatTaxes, so there is a natural delay. I finished my federal return 4 days before the deadline, but my state return was only ready 1 day before the deadline. However, the human preparer filled out my state return incorrectly, because he missed a W-2C file that I had uploaded previously. I reached out to point out the mistake, but I did not receive a fixed state return until 5 days AFTER the filing deadline. In the meantime, I asked for a refund for the state return instead, because I would rather have a refund and not file my state return through MyExpatTaxes rather than file it late. However, MyExpatTaxes refused to provide a refund since a human preparer had already worked on it (despite making a mistake and causing a 8 day delay in total).
There were a couple issues with my federal return but they were fixed more promptly. First, the software doesn't handle HSA rollovers, so I had to reach out to support to fix that in my return through human intervention. Second, the software was using the wrong year version of Form 8995-A, which was noticed and fixed by support later. Third, I made a mistake when entering my long-term capital gains, because I didn't realize that I had to select "Worldwide Investment Income and Worldwide Property Sales" under the Foreign income section to enter US capital gains that are not reported on Form 1099-B. I think the UI is a little confusing in this respect, since you have to enter US capital gains in the Foreign section, which led to my mistake. However, support responded promptly to these issues, and my federal return was fixed without undue delay.
Until my issues with my state return, I was happy with the service provided by support, and I appreciated that the MyExpatTaxes tax package explains nitty-gritty details like why the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion was selected for you over the Foreign Tax Credit.

MyExpatTaxes promised discount for repeat customers. They failed to deliver on this promise!

The software is super easy to use. My taxes were filed ten days ago and I already got a refund. These guys are my new go-to for U.S. taxes.

This software claims to help you “maximize your return,” but in practice it misses key steps necessary to do that. For example, it encourages users to skip deduction sections to save time by offering vague reassurances like “you can always come back to it later if it makes a difference,” but provides no prompt or warning at the end that leaving these blank does actually reduce your liability/refund. Important optimization opportunities—such as self-employed health insurance deductions—are also not highlighted, and the IRA contribution guidance is inaccurate: it implies contributions are only allowed through April 15, when in fact SEP IRA contributions are permitted through the filing deadline, including extensions. All of this is inconsistent with the company’s own marketing, which prominently claims to help users “get every credit and deduction you deserve” and even quotes customers saying that the software identifies opportunities for saving and gives them “autonomy.”
Furthermore, when I asked about a missing IRS-required statement in my generated forms, support refused to even clarify whether this was a compliance issue without requiring me to pay for a higher-tier plan.
If your return involves only basic employment income, this product probably works adequately. But if you expect to have any actual tax liability or refund, be prepared for incomplete guidance and a lack of meaningful support.

I’m allergic to doing tax returns and this platform is so easy to navigate holding your hand every step of the way. So grateful to have found it.

It's a pretty good service for what it is, and quite easy to use compared to other services out there.
This may be an unfair reason to subtract a star, but US taxes and reporting requirements are just so ridiculously complicated, and require so much prep, form-filling and documentation, that I can't bring myself to give five stars.
Compare to my Norwegian tax return, which is a pre-filled two-pager for my review, written in easy language with virtually no jargon or references to obscure sections and rules. Click to edit and update. Need to add something? Answer a few very simple questions that get straight to the bottom line, write a brief description, and attach documentation. No need to enter every detail into some form, because trustworthy answers to doubts and questions will be found in the documentation, not the form, anyway.
My US tax return is obviously nothing like that, even if the information that goes into it is exactly the same. This is, of course, not MyExpatTaxes' fault. But I can't help but think that they could improve the experience a lot if they put more effort and development into it.
For example, I'm sure a specialized tax AI could look through my statements, previous tax returns, pay stubs, etc. in a matter of minutes, follow up with a a few good questions, and simplify the process and cut the cost dramatically. Not only do I think it's possible, but I'm sure someone is working on that as I write this.
So, MyExpatTaxes are as good as a service like this gets these days (as far as I know, and I have done some exploring). But unless they're working on their own AI to revolutionize and cannibalize their own product, their method will very soon be obsolete. So before you sign up, make sure you check to see that there isn't yet an AI out there that does a better job.

I loved this service!
This was the most intuitive and indeed enjoyable tax software I have used. I liked how fun the prompts and general language was. This is the first time, after five years abroad, that I was able to figure out how to claim the dependent refund and I will definitely use this service again next year.

Easy to use. Asks all the right questions and gives you the options you need to get things done correctly. Very quick responding and helpful assistance with questions or issues and much lower price than what we pay our Italian accountant.

My experience doing the taxes in the software was a 3 but the customer service was prompt and provided all the answers I needed so because of the fast, accurate customer service, this is a firm 5 stars…although very expensive
