Very bad experience everytime

Very bad experience everytime! They do wrong billing. They add multiple counts to pieces while billing in the place of just one piece. This has happened many times for us. They also mess up the products with 2 customers while billing.

Screamed at and humiliated for having a backpack

Screamed at and humiliated — even though I’m a regular customer.

I’ve been shopping at this PENNY store near JLU Gießen three times a week for more than 8 months. I’m a regular customer, I do all my errands here, and I’ve never caused any trouble.

But one day, during checkout, the cashier suddenly screamed at me to show her my backpack — loudly, without explanation, and in front of everyone. She didn’t ask politely or discreetly. It was aggressive, public, and completely humiliating. I truly believe it was because of my appearance — I clearly stand out as a foreign shopper. Everyone in line turned to look, and I could feel their eyes judging me as if I had done something wrong.

If she had simply asked with basic respect, I would have cooperated immediately. But instead, I was treated like a suspect — even though there was no evidence, and even though I’m a familiar face in this store. At least, I thought I was.

I asked for a manager, hoping for professionalism. But nothing changed. There was no apology, no explanation — and as I left the store visibly upset, one of the staff members even laughed at me and replied to my question, “Why me?”, with:
“Because you have a backpack?”

Well — I’m a student. Having a backpack is completely normal when you're going to and from university. Am I being treated like a thief just for being a student with a bag?

Even the most basic idea that “the customer is king” wasn’t respected — not even 0.001%. As a regular, loyal customer, I was made to feel small, unwanted, and suspicious for no reason other than my appearance.

This is not just poor service. It’s disrespectful, unprofessional, and discriminatory. The moment I left was the moment I decided: I will never shop at this store again.

I’ll be filing a formal complaint and reporting this to the anti-discrimination office.
However, I will contact their costumer service to see what they have to say about this.

No one — especially regular customers — should be treated like this.

I'm writing to you as I just…

I'm writing to you as I just experienced the most outrageous behaviour from your manager on Duty.

I arrived at the till at around 18.45h to pay for my good. The next thing I see is a female member of staff confronting what turned out to be a shop lifter. In the middle of the kerfuffle she was asking for help from her customers to which nobody was prepared to intervene. In the end the shop lifter left the store after she wrangled the Rucksack of him. After he left she was shouting in the shop complaining that the male customers should have come to her aid. Not only did I consider the risk to myself, I also took personal liability into consideration. Clearly, she was on a mission without taking any risk into consideration. Instead of stopping a criminal she was more interested in the bottle of soft drink and other things he had in his bag.

Let me make one thing clear. I will not put my life at risk for a few items stolen by a criminal. She not only risked her own life as the criminal could have had a knife but demanded of the customers to risk their their lives too. As she was confronting us due to the lack of aid which she demanded, I made it clear to her, that she could have called the police as soon as she noticed what the man was up to. Yet, she wanted to be a hero. It ended up with me not being able to pay for my shopping as she ejected me from the shop because of my attitude.

I have learned that not much can be expected from your company's complaint procedure, but I'd advise you to have clear procedures in place in how to deal with thieves.

Penny Glonn

Penny Glonn, postal code 85625. The product was on sale from 3.29 to 2.29. The woman at the cash register charged me 3.29, when I asked why, she called another employee, who was rude and impolite. When I asked why I was charged more than what is written on the price, on the fridge, he rudely and arrogantly replied that it was an old date. I replied that it was not my fault. Already angry, he said that I could get the products at the price of 3.29 or that I should return them. Of course I returned them.

Extremely bad customer service

Extremely bad customer service. The staff completely ignores the customer's questions. If you ask a question what they don't like, they will ignore your email (even they promise to reply within 48 hours). It's a disrespect to the customer. Extremely unprofessional working attitude

Card Fraud

No idea who you are, but you will get bad karma from stealing money from innocent individuals including myself. Shame on you.

What's happened to me at one of their…

What's happened to me at one of their branches is almost a gag.

Me: (Give the cashier my N26 MasterCard)
Cashier: "No credit card"
Me: "You have MasterCard sign right here indicating you accept credit card"
Cashier: "No credit card"
Me: "Well technically it's not a credit card. It's actually debit card"
Cashier: "But it's not a German card"
Me: "It is"
Cashier: "But it's not flat" (presumably meaning that the card has embossed numbers unlike German EC Karte)
Me: "So what?"
Cashier: "It doesn't work"
Me: "Of course it does. I shop here every week and I know it works"
Cashier: "It doesn't work"
Me: "I paid here with this very card a couple of days ago. Why doesn't it work today?"
Cashier: "It doesn't work!"
Me: "Let me just try"
Cashier: "No"
Me: "Why? If it works, it just works. If it doesn't work, it just doesn't work, in which case I'll pay by cash"
Cashier: (Sighs and finally let me put my card on the card reader)
The payment was successful of course.
Cashier: (Tuts and throws a receipt to me)
